Pretty much, the owner playing the high and mighty "I won't put up with this!" is hilarious, he knew, everyone freaking knew.

Going back through some past news, Jim Crane promoted his son to some nebulous front-office position the same day Reid Ryan stepped down, and since Crane is in Manfred's inner circle of power-brokers, I'm guessing that the Astros knew this was coming and were making moves in preparation.
I enjoyed the part of the write up where they said that so many players were guilty of cheating that it wasn't worth the effort of punishing any of them at all. Nice to see...
Beltran, apparently right there with Cora, is getting off scot free, for example. Then again, it's 2 years after the fact, so tough to punish the right people. Punishing Beltran just hurts the Mets, and having to manage the Mets is already Beltran's punishment
Bunch of other players have moved on, so suspending any of them just hurts new teams. And sure MLBPA prevents any meaningful punishments or fines anyway...

Probably difficult to punish current management for something that happened as a player. They likely don't want the MLBPA involved in this, at all.

Oh, c'mon, it's the Tony Clark-led MLBPA. He'd issue a toothless statement about being "deeply disturbed" by Manfred's behavior or some shit, and then do nothing.

Doubt they’ll pick at this too much further, but pretty unlikely that Alex Cora was some rogue genius and no one else thought of doing anything. Been plenty of talk of the Yankees and the center field camera over the years, for example. But makes the public happier if you make an example of someone and then never speak of it again; problem all solved!

But I do agree. This is like drugs, just ignore it way too long.

You have to remember that, since 1920, every major league clubhouse has prominently displayed MLB's rules against consorting with gamblers and gambling of any kind. And the worst sin is gambling on your own team's games. Gambling has been the most egregious sin of MLB employees since the Black Sox scandal. So, no, it is not worse than Pete Rose.

I don't think they're "landmark," necessarily, and I get why other owners are grousing about the Astros essentially getting off with a slap on the wrist ($5 million is nothing to Crane).
I don't think the Astros should have the 2017 title vacated, as some have argued (and it would never happen, because MLB is so far up its own ass about its history, they'd never pretend a World Series got blipped out of existence). I do think they should get clowned on relentlessly for it, and that the coaching staff and front office should get whacked harder than they have been so far.* However, there's a huge difference between garden-variety cheating (which has been part of baseball since forever--we have proud spitballers in the Hall of Fame and Babe Ruth experimented with ram testosterone as a PED) and subverting the actual rules of the game.
* I'd have banned Luhnow for 3 years, would ban Cora for 5, and if I had the power to pull it off force Crane to sell the team.
I’m still enjoying the logic that the manager deserves a year ban (or longer) for knowing about it and not stopping it, but players that were heavily involved in DOING the horrific act won’t be punished at all because ‘hey, a lot of people were involved, and punishing them would be annoying, so no punishment, we’re good’
it’s either bad/serious, or not worth perusing, except in this case where it’s both at once. Years’ long bans for some, tsk tsk for others, all doing the same thing. Or actually in this case where the more involved you were, the less you were punished.
