MLB Pseudo-Season 2020: Roger, Dodgers

This is a story I've told in the past, but it bears repeating:

It was during a Sunday night game on ESPN that Morgan went on a long-winded, utterly insane diatribe about the outfield basket in Wrigley Field, the one intended to keep drunk morons from falling out of the bleachers and onto the field. Anyway, Morgan starts babbling that during his playing days, "everybody" in baseball referred to that basket as Banks Boulevard, because Ernie Banks hit "so many of his homers into that basket."

Follow along, class, and see if you can figure out the problem from these ideas:

- Ernie Banks was on the Cubs' roster from 1953 - 1971. He hit 512 home runs during that time.
- Of those 512, Morgan insisted that a lot of them landed in the basket at Wrigley Field.
- Therefore, without the basket, Banks wouldn't have had anywhere near 512 home runs.

However:

- In 1970 and 1971, Ernie only played in 111 games for the Cubs. This is important because:
- The basket wasn’t installed at Wrigley Field until May 1970.
- Banks hit only eight home runs at Wrigley Field in those two seasons, and one of them was in April of 1970, well before the basket went in.

Therefore:

- Of Ernie Banks' 512 career home runs, the most that could have landed in the basket is a grand total of seven. (And Banks' 500th home run, one of the eight hit in Wrigley Field during those final two seasons, didn't land anywhere near the basket, which gives us six.)
- Some quick math tells us that six of 512 indicates that, at the very most, just over one percent of Banks' career home runs could have possibly ended up in the basket.

So, obviously you can see why Morgan insisted on calling it Banks Boulevard, because the facts certainly bear it out.

K-rap, now that you mentioned it I remember that spouting/dust-up about the "basket," Musta been locker-room b.s. that eventually turned into...When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.

And I have been a bleacher-bum a number of times in Wrigley-ville. Mostly nice guys out there and saw a few go over the wall and bounce in front of the fire-house.

I grew up going to 25 - 35 games a year at Wrigley (born in '84) and also developed a strong dislike of Morgan because he actively campaigned to keep Ryne Sandberg--who was easily the best second baseman I ever saw play--out of the Hall. He even bitched about Sandberg's potential at Hall induction festivities for years before Sandberg was elected.

Don't get me wrong, Ryne Sandberg is a massive tool and I hate the way he has thrown his steroid-using teammates under the bus, because there is essentially no question that he was using amphetamines, but he was an incredible player.

As I recall (been a while since I've been in the Chicago area), there are four or five Harry Caray's locations still operating.

I agree offensive wise, but he lacked range even for a 2nd baseman. Joe shouldn't have trashed him but IIRC he was far from the only one that did.

When we went to Harry's then it was the original, but I can not remember the location. I still have my Da' Bleachers T-shirt. :beer:

The way I see it, we were damn lucky to have a 2020 season at all, so this season (and World Series) has, IMHO, as much legitimacy as any other.

Besides, complaining about asterisks smacks of sour grapes anyway.

Well, Braves fans can go to bed early tonight. 12-0 Dodgers in the 2nd inning.
