Fans Sue MLB for Refunds

This is basically the same thing that's happening with Ticketmaster.

We had tickets to see David Lee Roth in Las Vegas, and they didn't cancel it, they postponed it indefinitely. Therefore, we're not entitled to a refund.

We have tickets to the Freeway Series in July, which now seems highly unlikely to go on as scheduled. In all we have about $1500 locked up in those tickets. It would be nice to get that money back, and then decide what to do once the league decides how the season will go.

Not being a lawyer, I don't understand how suit can be brought for an act of God or a freak occurrence like a viral pandemic. What is the cause of action?

In the case of Ticketmaster, it's because the company very quietly made a retroactive change to their refund policy, so someone who bought tickets six months ago when there was no pandemic can't get their money back if the event has been postponed rather than cancelled outright. That's money people could actually use right now, especially if they've been furloughed from their job, so both the optics and the ethics are super shitty.

Like the man said, they’re calling it “postponed” instead of “cancelled”. Cancelled leads to automatic refunds, postponed does not.

The teams have tons of money fans paid for tickets to games we know aren’t going to happen. And people could probably really use that money back.

It’s just a shitty thing to do. Give everyone their money back, and when the season is decided, let people repurchase as they can. A lot of people won’t be able to make rescheduled games (as in our case it involves travel, time off work, etc). If that’s the case then they lose all the way around.

What happens if you have to cancel for work/illness/other? Do you eat the cost or do you get a refund? I've only dealt with them a few times.

How does ARod get the Mets while Jeter gets the crappy Marlins? Totally unfair on a baseball cosmic level.

Jason

It was unfair that Jeter got the Marlins over Jorge Mas, who actually had the money to run the team.

Not to mention, if MLB goes ahead with the rumored plan to play a shortened season at Chase Field and the various Cactus League facilities around Arizona to empty stands, then nobody gets to attend, and damn skippy they should get their money back. It's the right thing to do, but hey, capitalism.

If I can’t go to a rescheduled game or concert, it’s up to the venue to decide whether or not I can get a refund.

Random Wednesday Red Sox report/punishment is out. Loss of 2nd round pick, a replay operator is banned for 2020 and has to have a different position in 2021, and Cora is still banned for 2020 as a result of Astros cheating, not due to Red Sox in 2018. Got fired either way. Whatever scheme they uncovered (not sure the description was super, uh, descriptive of what was happening with that replay guy), not as severe as Astros, hence lighter punishment.

Happy to hear it was less involved than TrashcanLidGate, and that Cora didn't make 2018 look worse than 2017 Astros...

Yeah I read the report and the whole thing was incredibly lame.

And not getting refunds back for tickets you bought is shit and they should be sued. However 1001001, can I borrow some money? I don't think I have spent $1,500 total on all my tickets in my life. But I'm cheap and was spoiled with free concerts and music. :)

Interesting article about the three managers who got fired over the Astros cheating scandal...

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/...nsiders-explain-why-one-could-return-in-2021/

They think that A.J. Hinch will be back in a dugout soon after his suspension is over, and that the other two may never manage again.

If I'm an owner, why would I hire Hinch? They say he knew what was going on and even tried to stop it (supposedly). It is clear to me, that if that's the case, he lost control of his clubhouse and really shouldn't be managing again.

It seems to me Hinch is getting the benefit of the doubt about his future prospects for the worst reason of all, he's white.

Alex Cora is the better manager and IMHO will be the first to be hired - probably by the Red Sox. Nobody knows what kind of manager Beltran might have been. Maybe he'll find a job, but I think he'll have to start out as a coach or minor league manager.

People are giving Hinch leeway because he came out and admitted they were cheating, albeit late. If anything, he handled the public relations side of it better than Luhnow, who continued to deny.

I don't think the Red Sox will re-hire Cora, because the PR look would be an absolute nightmare (and they don't have the iron fist of control over the local press that they did when Lucchino and Epstein ran the team) ... but I do agree it's a non-zero possibility, especially because they made a very big show of announcing that Ron Roenicke was the interim manager and making it very clear he's on a one-year deal.

With Beltran, he'll land on his feet. He was always widely regarded as one of the most intelligent players in baseball during his playing days, often cited as having a sixth sense for when pitchers (both opposing and his teammates) were tipping their pitches, and he's been a finalist for too many other managerial jobs--he was literally the runner-up for the Yankees job that went to Aaron Boone, and he would have gotten the job if the Yankees couldn't get a deal done with Boone. Also, he didn't eat a suspension (despite being the only player called out by name in Manfred's report), he just needed to leave the Mets because they couldn't have that cloud hanging over them.
