MLB Offseason: February 15 isn't THAT far away...

I'm with Timby on this one. And it seems Bryce Harper is, too:
"Baseball's tired," he says. "It's a tired sport, because you can't express yourself. You can't do what people in other sports do. I'm not saying baseball is, you know, boring or anything like that, but it's the excitement of the young guys who are coming into the game now who have flair. If that's Matt Harvey or Jacob deGrom or Manny Machado or Joc Pederson or Andrew McCutchen or Yasiel Puig -- there's so many guys in the game now who are so much fun.

"Jose Fernandez is a great example. Jose Fernandez will strike you out and stare you down into the dugout and pump his fist. And if you hit a homer and pimp it? He doesn't care. Because you got him. That's part of the game. It's not the old feeling -- hoorah ... if you pimp a homer, I'm going to hit you right in the teeth. No. If a guy pimps a homer for a game-winning shot ... I mean -- sorry."

...

"If a guy pumps his fist at me on the mound, I'm going to go, 'Yeah, you got me. Good for you. Hopefully I get you next time.' That's what makes the game fun. You want kids to play the game, right? What are kids playing these days? Football, basketball. Look at those players -- Steph Curry, LeBron James. It's exciting to see those players in those sports. Cam Newton -- I love the way Cam goes about it. He smiles, he laughs. It's that flair. The dramatic."

Out of all the sins a person can commit, flipping a bat has to be somewhere between jaywalking and not putting the toilet seat back down on the severity scale. If people aren't supposed to have fun while playing a game, why should they play?

This "BASEBALL IS SERIOUS BUSINESS" and "EVERYTHING MATTERS" and "RESPECT THE UNWRITTEN RULES" bullshit is what led to the Diamondbacks becoming a bunch of headhunting pieces of shit under Gibson and the All-Star Game determining World Series home-field advantage, which is pretty easily the second- or third-worst decision of Selig's tenure as commissioner.

We had this discussion in the previous thread. Flipping a bat and flipping a bat so far it could make it into the stands are kinda different things.

He can flip it wherever he wants to as long as he doesn't hit anyone. You don't want him to do it, don't give up a Homerun. I'm all for a little more showboating in Baseball. Worse case is they'll have a villain role that people love to hate.

What I don't get, baseball has been showing up the hitters for years. You get struck out, they toss the ball around the horn. That is showing up the hitter in a big way, but no one pays it any mind. I too find the "unwritten rules" to be a dinosaur of an era that should be forgotten. Even with all the homeruns that are hit, it's still a rare event. Especially when it happens at a key moment or crucial point in a game. I like celebrations, think they need to be embraced. In my entire High School baseball career I only hit one homerun. That's it, I ran around those bases like I was late for something. I was so excited, I could barely contain myself.

Behold, Mickey Mantle with a righteous bat flip.

What a child.

I don't know who this young buck thinks he is but he needs to learn how to play the game the right way or he isn't going to make it.

and don't forget he was injury prone too. So don't sign him to an extended contract.

Matt Wieters left yesterday's game with pain in the elbow he had surgically repaired in 2014. He caught only one inning and did not take an at-bat.

Dexter Fowler: “[The Orioles] wanted me to pay them” for forfeited draft pick

“We never really were close,” says Fowler. “They wanted me to pay them what they said the draft choice I was costing them was valued at. They wanted me to pay them for the pick. So we said, OK, then give me an opt-out after one year, and they said that’s something they won’t do.”

If true, there is something seriously wrong with the Orioles if they think they can do business this way. They could become the destination everyone starts to avoid.

------------------------

Also, the Marlins are pissed they have to pay such a large difference in pay top Dan Jennings. They must think the Nats purposely lowballed on his new salary.

Not surprising a minor league team wouldn't want to pay an ex-exec that much.

Story

The Marlins have filed a grievance over the salary of former manager and GM Dan Jennings, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports. Jennings is now a special assistant to Nationals GM Mike Rizzo, and the Marlins believe that the $100,000 salary Jennings is getting from his new team isn’t commensurate with his responsibilities. The Marlins owe him the difference between his new salary and the $1.5 million he would have made if he hadn’t been fired.

This is far from the first time the Orioles have done something shady to get out of an agreement (they're rather infamous for having players "fail" their physicals for mystery reasons, particularly when they're having trouble coming to terms with their draft picks). Dan Duquette is a loathsome piece of shit, and Angelos isn't any better. I've mentioned this before but it genuinely irks me that Duquette gets credit for building the team that Andy MacPhail put together.

Too bad there's not more, but he seems to be flipping the bat in disgust. Like he just missed one. I've also seen two clips of Mantle flipping his bat after striking out. So it's undeniable he'd flip his bat, but when he did it, it may have been out of anger with himself. Most accounts of his behavior after a home run that I've read was that he ran the bases with his head down or looking straight ahead because he didn't want to show up the pitcher. His behavior after in the video of his walk off home run in a game in the 1964 World Series was as nonchalant as if it had been hit in spring training. He just dropped the bat and trotted around the bases. Same with his game seven home run in 1952. Now those would've been some times to justify flipping the bat.

The season is a long slog, so can a player really be on like Cam Newton for 162 games? That said, the game is full of colorful players, always has been. I think Harper created a bit of a straw man to attack. The thing is, would a solo home run with two out in the top of the seventh of a 6-1 game in Cleveland in early May really be worth a bat flip? That's where I would roll my eyes.

yeah, this draft-pick compensation will be a fun one when it comes time for the next CBA.

So let me get this straight. Adam LaRoche is retiring because...the team won't let him bring his brat kid into the clubhouse every day? :guffaw:

Not sure why you think it's overly funny. Report is that it was important to him, and (at least verbally) part of the negotiation/deal when he signed there in the first place. If it's important to him, they told him he could do it, and now are backing out... Kinda see his point. Can argue about whether it's appropriate to have a 14 year old there all the time, or why he wants every day to be 'bring a child to work day', but if that was expressed as part of the deal prior to signing, WTF?

And the team is clearly behind him. Everyone's said they like the kid, he's no trouble at all, has his own little locker there, whatever. Looks like Kenny either decided to be a prick or thought it was a bigger distraction than anyone else did and decided to act. Doesn't seem like the kid's a brat, and the team seems to enjoy having him around. It's probably a little much having him around constantly, but not like we don't see Ortiz's kid around pretty often and everyone seems to enjoy that.

DEFINITELY shows what a shitshow the team is, though. And Sale was a big part of trash talking the GM, not a great sign. Half hoping that the Red Sox read the report and make the White Sox another offer, see if they want to continue being a terrible team/GM by trading away that troublesome Ace that showed them up... ;)

Kenny didn't say that LaRoche couldn't bring the kid in at all. Just not every day. All Kenny asked him to do, was dial it back a bit. Seems like a reasonable request.

I'm sure there are a fair amount of players who bring their kids around, but not every damn DAY.

Sounds like that was part of the deal when he signed him, though. Can't use it as a selling point and then bitch later when he does it...

Looks like Kyle Schwarber is going to be Jason Hammel's personal catcher.

Here's hoping Jason continues the improved pitching we've seen this spring.

Poor Drake LaRoche won't ever learn how to use physics to model how much his father sucks at hitting baseballs.
