MLB Offseason: February 15 isn't THAT far away...

20 years ago there used to be separate league offices - I don't think that's the case anymore.

Correct. Bud Selig was anticipating another labor war in 2000 (which did very nearly happen), and he didn't want a repeat of the 1981 and 1994 strikes, in which representatives from the AL and NL offices engaged in back-channel negotiations with the MLBPA -- in 1981 because the players didn't trust Bowie Kuhn or Ray Grebey, in 1994 because the owners were losing money hand over fist and most didn't agree with Selig and Manfred's efforts to break the union. Now that he was the official full-time commissioner and didn't have the interim tag anymore, Selig wanted to make it clear to the union that they would be negotiating with him and his lieutenants, and no one else, so he merged the authority of the league offices under the umbrella of the commissioner's office.

Tim Kurkjian was on Tony Kornheier's radio show last week and the subject came up. Kurkjian said a few NL owners floated the idea to the Commissioner as something that had broad support - that led to Manfred's original "we're looking into it" statement. Later, he found out that the support wasn't as large amongst owners as he'd been led to believe and that's why Manfred seemed to walk back his initial supportive statements.

From MLBTR, a chart of how much money each team spent on free agents this past offseason:

We have traveled to the alternate 1980s timeline, because the Mets are spending money again as are the Orioles but the Yankees are somehow broke and the Braves are not spending like a drunk / insane man owns them.

Apparently the Cubs signed Matt Murton to a minor-league deal.

Color no one shocked, Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia popped for a 3 time for using performance enhancing drugs. Banned out of baseball, bye-bye.

I've always said that pitchers are the more likely candidates to use steroids. I have no problem with this happening.

How stupid do you have to be? They tell you exactly what not to take and then you pretty much know you're going to be tested before spring training, especially if you are already on a highly suspicious list. What an idiot.

ZERO for the Yankees? I thought they signed that SS from the Cubs.
