MLB Offseason: February 15 isn't THAT far away...

But dunno that 200M was on the table. And doubt Shark turned down 100+ to sign for 90. And most of the other 'offer in hand' bullshit that's been reported in the last week or two...

It really depends on who's reporting it. Ken Rosenthal is extremely well-connected, probably the best-connected reporter since Gammons in his heyday. Jerry Crasnick is also extremely reliable, particularly when it comes to contract details. Heyman used to just make shit up when he was writing for The Sporting News like 15 years ago but has gotten a lot better over the past decade or so (basically after he stopped being a Mets mouthpiece and went to national coverage). Wittenmyer is a tool. Olney generally has good scoops regarding the Yankees, but that's because they're the only front office that will talk to him. Joel Sherman is generally reliable but has gotten burned a few times in the last few years. Most beat writers are garbage (Shaughnessy getting the Spink award this year is just hilariously disgusting), since they lose their access the minute they don't parrot the team's messaging. (The Chicago Tribune, notably, got a lot more toothless after the Tribune Company sold the Cubs.)

Rosenthal reported that the Nationals went to $200 million on Heyward, and given that front office's bizarre behavior and Rosenthal's history, I'm inclined to give it credence.

If Heyward doesn't exercise the 3 year out, then he gets another shot after year 4?

If he doesn't exercise that one, he stays for the full 8 years?

Any no-trade clause?

No word on a no-trade has come out yet, but of course if he skips his opt-outs (he won't, unless the RSN bubble bursts -- and I'm not entirely sure it won't) he'll have five-ten rights after that.

Paul Sullivan shit on the new ownership almost immediately. Once Hendry left you could tell he was a major source since Sullivan's information dried up. He was constantly absurdly critical of 'the plan' and as such seems to have been frozen out by Theo & co. He got moved off the beat later, thankfully.

Sullivan was always shit, though. I'm not a huge fan of Mark Gonzales but he can at least put together two coherent sentences. The only more worthless writer on the Tribune staff is Rosenbloom.

Only Paul Sullivan could make having to follow a baseball team seem joyless.

Rosenbloom is horrible, I agree.

The Heyward deal is reportedly for less than $200 million. I'm liking the sound of that.

Edit: Jesus, the lineup.

Zobrist 2B
Heyward CF
Bryant 3B
Rizzo 1B
Soler RF
Schwarber LF
Russell SS
Montero C

Zobrist is the only player over 26.

Montero is 32.

I think if Miggy has a better year than 2015, he'll be a great contributor on the offensive side.

Maddon just needs to keep the 4 young guys from having sophmore slumps.

The nice thing about having a number of good players is that even if 2-3 of them have slumps there are guys to either slide in to replace them or other spots in the order to pick them up.

Houston gets closer Ken Giles and SS Jonathan Arauz from the Phillies in exchange for RHP's Thomas Eshelman and Harold Arauz and former #1 pick Mark Appel.

Worth it?

Makes the trade for Kimbrel not look like such an overpay anymore, and just what the market was this year.

Manfred has denied Pete Roses request for reinstatement. I know he won't drop it but I wish Pete Rose would just go away.
