MLB Offseason: February 15 isn't THAT far away...

Two ~mystery teams~ have reportedly gone north of $200 million for Heyward.

The Heyward deal is reportedly for less than $200 million. I'm liking the sound of that.

Edit: Jesus, the lineup.

Zobrist 2B
Heyward CF
Bryant 3B
Rizzo 1B
Soler RF
Schwarber LF
Russell SS
Montero C

Zobrist is the only player over 26.

Welcome to Chicago Jason Heyward, Ben Zobrist and John Lackey.

2 big pieces taken from the Cards and they still might be after Tyson Ross from SD.

Heyward got 184 Million over 8 years.

Starting to get mildly annoyed over the quality of baseball reporting. Unless Heyward decided to eat a ton of money (or perhaps loved the 2 different opt-out clauses in this deal), it was reported he had at least one 200M offer on the table, but signed for 184. Maybe he did, or more likely, the 200M wasn't there?

Lots of this sort of reporting this year. Likely mostly agents using reporters as puppets and them not having the stones to do anything other than tweet it out to get clicks, but still, it's not good. Shark reported had 100M offer on the table, signed for 90M. Zobrist was reported to have an 80M offer, took 56M. Cueto was supposed to have 6/120M on the table and either said no or that wasn't a real offer either. Bet he wishes he could have a do-over there, based on how things are going! (the lack of people still bidding on him, not the stupid contract money getting thrown around)

Anyway, just seems like lots of BS rumors being reported as fact, and not much effort into real reporting. Unless MLB players are suddenly becoming altruistic and not caring about top dollar, "respect" anymore

Well they did use the word "rumor" in all the stories I read, so I didn't believe anything till there was real news :)

sure but that's kinda a chickenshit way of being able to report whatever you want without having to verify or stand behind it, no?

"Rumored to be asking for X" is a little different than saying he has an offer in hand for Y, as well.

Same kind of crap as someone always biting on Scott Boras' Mystery Team during the bidding process. Always a BS, made up number, and never works.

That Mystery Team has gotta be the most depressed team in sports. They always bid the most money and years, and never get the player! What do they have to do to land someone? :guffaw:

If there were indeed offers for more money on the table, I would guess offering multiple opt-outs may have convinced Heyward to take the Cubs' deal.

yeah, having 2 of them IS pretty sweet. Guarantees he can get out whenever the FA market goes nuts again, and go for another 6-7 year deal while still young. Unless he blows out an ACL or whatever, in which case he can just ride it out for 8 years of sweet paydays.

But dunno that 200M was on the table. And doubt Shark turned down 100+ to sign for 90. And most of the other 'offer in hand' bullshit that's been reported in the last week or two...
