The Red Sox traded SP Wade Miley and RP Jonathan Aro to the Mariners for RP Carson Smith and SP Roenis Elias. I really like this deal. Carson Smith is a very solid reliever and Boston really needed some more depth in the bullpen. I'm not familiar with Roenis Elias, but he sounds like a fairly dependable innings-eating #5 starter, so not too dissimilar from Wade Miley (though I haven't looked at Elias' numbers, so I don't know how much better Miley is than him).

Meanwhile, the Braves traded Miller for #1 draft overall draft pick Dansby Swanson and Ender Inciarte. If Dansby pans out as projected than this is quite a haul. Iciarte was a 300 hitter with 30 stolen bases last year which is a nice piece player.
With Miller going to Arizona, do the Cubs go after Ross? And if so, who do they trade? I can't see dealing Castro and Baez.

As I was saying earlier in the year, it's not that the CBA explicitly allows it, it's that it doesn't explicitly disallow it -- and "if it's not illegal, then it's legal" is not how labor law works in any sense. If it were explicitly allowable to hide a player in the minors for service time reasons, then the Cubs wouldn't have kept insisting that Bryant needed to work on his outfield defense (despite him never even taking a practice inning in the outfield during his time in Iowa).
The Cubs are going to have to affirmatively defend that logic, too. At the time, they claimed to have sent him down for defense and versatility. What did he get assigned to do at AAA to improve? What improvements happened between that date and the date his contract was purchased? And so on. Beyond that, the Cubs will have to argue in front of an impartial arbitrator that they legitimately felt Mike Olt and his seeing-eye dog was a better option at 3B than a guy who was ready for the majors in 2014.
Most people assume that an employer can do whatever the fuck they want as long as it isn't explicitly barred by law or contract. This is often functionally true for at-will, non-union employers. This is not true under a collective bargaining agreement, and certainly not true for one with a union that can forcefully attack bad faith in system arbitration.
Given MLB's history in the courts (particularly its history of losing in terms of bad-faith shams), I'd say Bryant has a very good shot of winning and the league is very much going to want the Cubs to roll over and settle -- just as they pressured the Astros to do with Springer last year -- because this is not a fight 20+ teams nor the league office actually wants going into a labor negotiation.

If the players have issue with it they should take it up in the next CBA. I assume they will.

You acted like they done poor Ricky dirty. What I said then and now is they did what was in the best interests of the club AND Renteria got paid through his contract anyway.
