MLB Offseason: February 15 isn't THAT far away...

Read an interesting baseball quote the other day, attributed to Steve Jobs. It read, in part;

"...a home run is better than two doubles."

Hmmm...let's see.

Home Run = 1 run
Two Doubles = 1 run, and a man on 2nd, with a number of relatively easy ways to bring him home for another run...

???

Dusty Baker logic.

Colby Rasmus is the first player to accept a QO since the passing of the new CBA three years ago.

Edit: And now Matt Wieters is the second.

Mr. Laser Beam, how do you feel about the Hicks/Murphy trade?

It seems like a fair trade, but I feel like Hicks might have more potential. At least, that's just the feeling I get when the Twins have been notorious for trading young players away that weren't performing, and then said players almost instantly become all stars elsewhere.

Eh, mixed feelings there. Great closer, so makes the bullpen pretty good, but seemed like a giant overpay for the right to pay a closer market rate for the next 3 years. Shocked it took that much, hoped some of that prospect capital could be used to help fix the rotation. Plus side, it kinda forces them to go spend on a FA SP now, otherwise it makes this look even worse. Would like Price, thinking Cueto or Zimmerman once the dust settles. See Price and Grinke getting too much, and the Sox settling for the next guy after that, hopefully at a slight discount in $ or years...

I heard talk that the Braves actually tried to shop Simmons to the Mets in return for Matt Harvey and Jacob deGrom. Yeah, good luck with that. :guffaw:

The Mets called about Simmons and they basically told them they either wanted one of those guys or to get off the phone. We don't really want any of the Mets prospects.

The Braves need to look at trading Freddie Freeman if they are truly trying to rebuild. He can't carry the entire team by himself next year, and his value will be pretty high, and the guy is good enough to go somewhere where he can actually win.

Braves are actively shopping Andrelton Simmons and Julio Teheran. Liberty Media is getting richer and richer and they have no intentions of actually putting together a winning team. I don't know how much more I can take.

Incredibly wealthy ownership gets a nearly free mallpark in a ridiculously wealthy area, cuts costs, pockets money, sky blue, water wet.

Are they still planning on catapulting people over that expressway to get into the stadium?

Well, I'm not entirely sure anyone in Atlanta would call the Perimeter an "expressway," but yeah, there is going to be literally no public transit in the area of that new stadium in Cobb County. The traffic jams in that neck of the woods are going to be ridiculous 81 days a year.

Given what some officials down there really think of MARTA, and considering the area that the team's moving to, I can't say I'm surprised that there's no mass transit at the new park.

I really don't think the Red Sox overpaid that much for arguably the best closer in the game. (Or at least one of the best closers.) Giving up Manuel Margot hurts but he was pretty much guaranteed to be moved this offseason, he had a lot of value but no real place on the Red Sox roster. Better to get something out of him than to hoard him for too long. Javier Guerra was considered one of the Sox' better prospects, but again, no room for him on the major league roster, better to sell him now than risk his losing value.

And I wouldn't be surprised if the plan all along has been to bring in a starting pitcher from the FA market. Most of the guys the Sox would have really liked to trade for (i.e. Sonny Gray, Chris Sale) would have taken way more than what Boston gave up to get Kimbrel.

Not saying that package gets Sale or anything, but if two BIG prospects/players had to go, those first two would have been more than just throw-ins on that deal. the 3 years of control is nice, and I like Kimbrel, but it just seems like a LOT to give up for a closer, especially to pay him 11-13M a year for the next 3 years. Upgrades the whole bullpen, so can see that angle, just felt like a lot.

The Braves are actively shopping basically anyone on the roster who's owed money, including Freeman.

I get that it's customary to have a rummage sale before moving into a new home, but jeez.

The first of four nights of awards announcements is going on as we speak on the MLB Network.

Tonight: Rookie Of the Year
Tuesday: Manager Of The Year
Wednesday: Cy Young
Thursday: MVP

Being reported that David Ortiz will retire at end of the upcoming season. Had one more year (potentially with current options) on the deal, so little shocking that he's calling it after this season instead of 2017, but good to see stars go out right BEFORE the big fade, and not trying to drag out a corpse for a couple too many years and have it be sad.

If it comes out this way, will definitely miss him. More than just about anyone else, he's been the guy that took the Red Sox from somewhat sad/futile to a Championship franchise, and got them over the hump.

Kinda annoyed that this will now lead to something similar to the Jeter Fanwank Tour, as well. Maybe not on that level, but sure it will be marketed somewhat similarly, though hopefully toned down...

I hope every team gives him a phone during his farewell stops.
