MLB Offseason 2014-15: Wait, pitchers and catchers report WHEN?

The Wolff brothers seem to have given up on the move and are investing in the nation's worst baseball stadium, and in new spring training facilities.

I'll believe that when the A's can go an entire season without the stadium literally overflowing with shit.

God it would be great if Arod embraced this identity.

When the word got out that the Yankees were demanding that Rodriguez make a public apology (fuckin', considering he doesn't owe anyone any apologies), I was hoping he'd hold a two-hour press conference where he flipped off Bud Selig, the media and every Yankees fan who hates him, then at the end say "Fuckin' play ball," drop the mic and walk out.

I hope he hits 900 homeruns this year and takes a victory lap on Wade Boggs horse with both both middle fingers in the air.

The Yankees made him apologize? Reference please. To my knowledge this has been Choke-Rod's desire all along.

^I've got no love for A-Rod, but I completely agree with everyone who's calling out the Yankees for their hypocrisy; that they intend to honor Pettite while making Rodriguez into an even bigger pariah than he already is a perfect illustration of what their organization is all about.

To be fair, my favorite team let Bonds get away with plenty during his tenure before ushering Melky Cabrera toward the door as fast as they could--and, of course, they've done a lot to distance themselves from Bonds since his departure--but the Giants have never thumbed their noses at other teams (save the Dodgers) the way the Yankees have.

In other news, Pablo Sandoval is fat.

--Sran

Tony Gwynn and David Wells were fat too. They did fine.

All manager and owners "thumbed" their nose. But they just put three of those manager in the BHOF along with Big George S.

How have the Yankees "thumbed their noses" at other teams? I'm not following you.

We don't know that's it is "hypocrisy" because we know the two situations were very different. A-Rod got caught twice, lied each time. The second time he went over the top with all the legal crap and wouldn't even defend him self at arbitration. He got everything he deserved. Andy owned up.

I don't blame the Yankees for not wanted to pay the HR bonus stuff they agreed to when everyone on the planet didn't hate him. Now, if he breaks those records it's going to be negative press.

Interesting article here on the "Education of A-Rod".

Poor self centered A-Rod... now he has to explain to his daughter why everyone hates him. (snif, snif)

To be clear, you have no problem with cheating as long as you don't deny it if you get caught? In that case, you can have your number retired without issue, full honors? Not like Pettitte is going into the HoF and they HAD to do this, they went for it on their own. Ortiz gets popped for steroids tomorrow, and he just says "yeah, been doing that for years, my bad", you're totally good with him? :guffaw:

Waiting for you to call out PEDitte as often as you do the lame A-Roid references. Even though you'll be cheering for him by May, as he'll be your starting DH and likely #3 hitter in the order ;)

Multiple sources from the weekend said that after Rodriguez (funny that you call him Choke-Rod when he had literally one of the greatest postseasons of all time for the Yankees) met with the team on Friday, they insisted that he issue a public apology and offered him the use of Yankee Stadium for a venue. He declined.

"Hey, that stuff we agreed to pay you? Yeah, we don't like you anymore so we don't want to pay you for it."

Fuck that noise. The Yankees don't get to get out of their contractual obligations just because they decided to turn a guy into baseball's biggest monster. They signed that contract, they made their bed, they can sleep in it. It's not Rodriguez's fault that George Steinbrenner absolutely adored him.

We don't know that's it is "hypocrisy" because we know the two situations were very different. A-Rod got caught twice, lied each time. The second time he went over the top with all the legal crap and wouldn't even defend him self at arbitration. He got everything he deserved. Andy owned up.

"Andy was really really sorry even though he got popped after he said he was sorry the first time."

Fuck that noise. Now you're just splitting hairs because you like Pettite and you think Rodriguez is some sort of demon.

I linked to that yesterday in this thread, and it's an incredible read about an incredibly broken person. We place far too many expectations on professional athletes along the way, many of whom are very fragile human beings.

Both parties did shitty things. Rodriguez was part of a doping scandal; MLB illegally obtained evidence and violated its own Joint Drug Agreement and Collective Bargaining Agreement when it punished him. But Rodriguez is far from the first person to use illegal drugs and he certainly won't be the last. Singling him out is absolutely and completely absurd.

Especially for a fan of a team that's had more than their share of PED users over the past decade or so. But you're only mad at A-Rod...for some reason. Likely due to the 60M+ that's owed to him for another 3 years. No one seemed to mind when those same PEDs helped win a WS Ring, though, he was fine then, clearly only cheated before and after...

A large part of it is that a lot of fans will blindly follow whatever the sportswriters say, and sportswriters are fucking morons with no actual moral compass, but they pretend to be geniuses and bastions of morality, so players are demonized and idolized at random.

And whether they are idolized or demonized is often dependent on how well they get along with said sportswriters; Frank Thomas was criticized over and over again by the Chicago media for being honest, whereas Sammy Sosa (whom everyone knew was using PEDs) was given a free pass--until he left the team, that is--because he took pictures with Barney and ran around waving to drunken fans in RF.

Michael Jordan cheated on his numerous times, yet his name was conpicuously absent from a 1998 Sports Illustrated article regarding infidelity among athletes and athletes having children out of wedlock, an article that instead focused its attention on Larry Johnson and Shawn Kemp--the latter of whom has apparently fathered more children than is known by the general public.

Or, to use the example I keep bringing up -- Barry Bonds' only crime was murdering the shit out of every baseball he saw, but because he was surly and a bit of a dick to most people, he was baseball's biggest pariah until Bud Selig decided that Alex Rodriguez was Satan. Ray Lewis was involved in a double-homicide and almost certainly destroyed evidence (the suit he was wearing that night was never found), committing obstruction of justice doing so, but because he cultivated a cuddly, "Jesus loves me and He loves all of you too" image, paid off the victims' families and continued to be really really good at football, and because he gave lots of good quotes to reporters, when he retired he was suddenly the greatest linebacker ever to play.

^ A 100 year old ballpark & it's surrounding area can be full of surprises. Oh well, at least it won't be held up any more than it already has.

Bleachers won't be ready until May...good luck with that.

First you complain about the rooftop owners (an argument that you temporarily won, given that the request for a TRO was denied), and now you're making fun of the Cubs for not being able to finish the bleachers until May, which is something they've been saying they wouldn't be able to do since early January due to this uncontrollable thing called, you know, weather.

The Cubs' ownership and management deserve plenty of mocking, but most rational people have known that the bleachers wouldn't be open for a while, and so I don't get the LOLLLLLLLLLL.

Have you seen the previews for this show where Ray Lewis goes around helping these temperamental little league coaches with their issues. My eyes rolled so far back in my head that I saw grey matter.

Quoted for truth.

Bonds deserves better, and Lewis deserves to be in jail.

Ray Lewis had a plea agreement with the prosecutors and testified against his co-defendants. They, on the other hand, argued self-defense successfully. As a consequence, he was the only one convicted. Obviously, he should not have destroyed evidence. But, had he not, he likely would have been acquitted entirely. Maybe the punishment for obstruction should have been higher, but he got the benefit of ultimately cooperating with the prosecution.
