MLB Offseason 2014-15: Wait, pitchers and catchers report WHEN?

Not open for further replies.
The Padres have continued their massive overhaul of their defense, sending two junk prospects to Atlanta for Justin Upton. Does Preller have to use the MLBTR transaction tracker just to figure out who he's acquired at this point?

Anyway, this now gives them a lineup of:

LF Kemp
CF Myers
RF Upton
1B Alonso
2B Gyorko (lol)
3B Solarte
SS Amarista
C Derek Norris

Way to go, Braves ... you spent months scaring people off Upton with an insane price tag, then turned around and got a worse deal for him than you did for Mark Teixeira.

Edit: The Yankees are about to trade Martin Prado and David Phelps to the Marlins for Nathan Eovaldi and Garrett Jones. What the shit? Why are they trading a middle infielder for an OF / 1B? Those are the two positions that the Yankees actually have some kind of depth at.

Pretty much. Middlebrooks had no place left in the Red Sox organization, so he needed to go. Hanigan is likely going to be playing a backup role to Christian Vazquez next year until Blake Swihart is ready for the majors. Hanigan has two years left on his deal plus an option for 2017, though, which makes me wonder if the Red Sox will dump him after 2015 or keep him as the backup and use Vazquez or Swihart as part of a trade package to bring back a nice return. If both prospects fulfill their potential, keeping them both and relegating one to a backup role would be a waste.

In this story, the Yankees are swearing off Scherzer.

It says he's (now) looking for a Lester type deal, rather than the earlier reported $200M.

What teams could be interested now? The same 3 or 4 that were after Lester? Could the Cubs splurge some more?

No Justin Upton?? :weep:

The Braves are going to have a Gattis / Upton the Lesser / Markakis with a bad neck outfield, and it's going to be glorious.

The Cubs are an option theoretically (it's not like they don't have the money) but I fully expect them to save their money to make a run at David Price and / or Jordan Zimmermann (and possibly Heyward) next year -- I think Lester was their big acquisition this winter. Lester / Arrieta / Hammel / Hendricks / one of Wada or Wood or Doubront or Turner is a pretty solid rotation.

I think the Tigers can still keep Scherzer, but if the Yankees are out (I doubt it but if Randy Levine is calling the shots again over Cashman then God only knows) then he'll probably land in Los Angeles, possibly Seattle, possibly San Francisco.

You missed one big part of that trade, the reason why it was really done is to get Domingo German.

The Cubs sign David Ross to a 2 year, $5M deal. Lester has his personal backstop.

They also signed Ryan Lavarnway, another ex-Red Sox catcher. Castillo is definitely going somewhere else at this point, just a matter of where.

I have no idea what Cashman is doing.

The Braves outfield won't be that different from a defensive standpoint. Justin Upton was horrible as is Gattis but B.J. and Markakis aren't exactly liabilities out there. The bad neck thing is a non-issue. He's expected to be ready for spring training with no issues.

As for the Justin trade. There were actually four prospects sent over to Atlanta in exchange for a one year rental. Not really expecting anything major for a rental. The whole objective was to replenish the farm and the Braves have done that this season. Rebuilding for 2017 seems to be the plan and this all but confirms it.

Ruben Amaro to Ryan Howard: "We're better off without you."

No can deny that Howard's contract is awful, and that Howard would be better off playing in the American League. But is it right for Amaro to rip Howard publicly when he's the one who thought singing Howard to a long-term deal was such a great idea in the first place?

Howard's not the player he once was, but I don't believe he's the sole the reason for the Phillies problems; Amaro has run that team into the ground with his bone-headed moves; for him to lay this mess at Howard's feet--after everything Howard did to help the Phillies win a World Series--shows what a despicable human being he is.

May Santa leave a lump of coal in your stocking, Ruben. You suck!

The Braves so badly want Gattis to not catch that they gave 37-year-old AJ Pierzynski a contract.

I don't think John Hart has any idea what he's doing.

Nationals sign Uggla to a minor-league contract with a spring training invitation. Congratulations, Nats, have fun with this!

The Dan Uggla he was with the Marlins might show up.

It's highly unlikely that a 34-year-old guy who's been in straight decline since 2010 is going to suddenly pull it back together unless he gets, like, a Therapeutic Use Exemption for a seeing eye dog to be at the plate and bark when it sees a good pitch or something.
