MLB Offseason 2010-11

Pretty big blow to the Yankees, he would have been a valuable piece this year. Leaves them with 40% of their rotation pretty suspect...

Vlad to Baltimore for one year, $8 million.

On one hand, he's a merc who went for the money. On the other hand, since Baltimore's not going to be in it, they'll trade him at the deadline to a contender. So he gets his money and gets to play for a winner eventually.

By now most of us have seen the headlines about the Mets ownership and their ties to this whole Bernie Madoff thing. My question is this: Is the actual existence of the team itself in jeopardy? Might this Irving Picard attempt to seek a dissolution of the Mets in his attempt to take back the money he claims the Wilpons made from Madoff? Should Mets fans be concerned?

If the Mets simply fizzled out of existence and their crappy new stadium was razed to make way for an extended parking lot for LaGuardia airport, I think we could all agree this would be a good thing.

You give me a lousy team on the field but an organization with a plan in mind to improve the team, and a group of players to build around, I can live with that.

You give me an incompetent organization with direction and no chance of putting a decent product on the field anytime soon, that's where I draw a line. It's what drove me away from being a Knick fan and is what's driving me away from being a Mets fan.

It definitely seems like there's blood in the water with the current ownership. I should be excited that spring training is around the corner, but I just don't give two toasted shits.

I agree that Burnett is guaranteed a rotation spot, but I'd still file him under 'suspect.'

As currently constituted, they'll beat up on the weaker teams all season and get slaughtered in the playoffs by teams with better pitching.

I'm not a Red Sox fan, but living in the Boston area you hear all the news about them, and they look to be loaded.

If the Yankees score enough runs early in games, they have the best bullpen in MLB. No one will touch them. Just need them to hold on till the 7th inning!

RAMA

This isn't a contract year for him, is it? Because that's the only way you'll get a decent year out of him.

Speaking of rotations, I can't wait until the Blue Jays current starting crop has matured, because I think they could be a real force in a year or two.

Ricky Romero (age 25, 14-9 with a 3.73 ERA in 2010)
Brandon Morrow (age 26, 10-7 with a 4.49 ERA)
Brett Cecil (age 24, 15-7 with a 4.22 ERA)
Kyle Drabek (age 23, 0-3 with a 4.76 ERA, 14-9 with a 2.94 ERA in AA New Hampshire)
Jesse Litsch (age 26, 1-5 with a 5.76 ERA)

Listch, I should note, has been hit hard by injuries the last couple years, but posted excellent numbers in both 2007 and 2008. Overall, though, I'm super-excited to have a team with a bunch of young arms with a ton of upside.

And on 3 of every 5 days, thats going to be an issue...

The problem with going the "shutdown bullpen" route, is the fact that bullpen pitchers (minus Mariano Rivera), year in and year out, are a shit show. Soriano is a good pitcher, but one could say someone like Bobby Jenks or Daniel Bard, could have just as good as a year in the set up role.

^^^And agreed Canadave, that group is going to be a force in a few years.

Is anyone at least a little bit bugged by the prospects - or lack thereof - for Albert Pujols re-signing with the Cardinals?

Well, the Pujols / Cardinals talks broke down, with Pujols' camp reporting no new proposal from the team over the last 48 hours. Looks like he'll hit the market this fall.

Apparently the Cardinals are playing this the smart way, and refusing to go more than seven years on a contract. As far as building a team goes, that's not a bad idea -- the likelihood that Pujols will age in a Barry Bonds / Ted Williams fashion, given his health issues, is pretty small, and there's no way he'll be worth $30 million a year after age, say, 36. Losing Pujols, though, will be brutal in terms of PR.

Edit: Karl Ravech is saying that the money is the source of the breakdown in talks. The Cardinals' proposal would put Pujols in the top ten salary range, but not in the top five. The St. Louis Dispatch says the contract length is the cause, with Pujols wanting ten years, and the Cardinals offering seven years guaranteed, and options for the last three.

The Jays have signed Scott Podsednik to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training. Toronto will be his seventh MLB team if he makes the roster, and I suspect he will. If nothing else, he'll add some great depth to the bench, and may allow the Jays to bring Bautista in to play third instead of OF, if they want. We shall see.

^

If they get Bautista into a contract any time soon. Apparently the arbitration's Friday. I hope they don't give away the store for him. At last check he was asking for 10M and the Jays were offering 7m. I think 7M is fair. It's only a one year deal. If he puts up those numbers again then I'd say he's worth 10. As it stands that's a lot to pay for what could be a flash in the pan.

Either way, I like him better in the OF than at the hot corner. He's competent but unremarkable at 3rd and you vastly increase the chances that he's gonna get hurt.

^ True... it's a bit of a trade-off, but I have seen a lot of people mention it, as he doesn't have the greatest range as an OF. Anyway, I suspect they'll probably sign him for somewhere between 8 and 9 M, and if he turns out to be a one-year wonder, well, no harm done, really, as it'll be just a single-season deal.
