yeah, there's stupidly expensive middle relievers, and then there's THAT. Guess they figured they couldn't upgrade any more position players because of the contracts, and there's jack shit left for decent starting pitching, so might as well try and lock down the end of the bullpen, so if they manage to find themselves with a lead, they've got a better shot at keeping it...

And if that doesn't happen, then there's two overpaid Sorianos.

This is interesting -- KC starting pitcher Gil Meche is retiring at age 32, citing his injury issues and inability to perform at 100%, and walking away from $12 million. Of course, the $43 million he already got from KC isn't exactly spare change. But it's interesting to see someone walk away when most ballplayers have no issue with sitting on the DL collecting a paycheck. Hell, Oakland gave Ben Sheets $10 million after he was damaged goods, so Meche still could've gotten a few million from someone after this contract expires.

^And not one time are they going to show the World Champions. Interesting. :wtf:

I don't post in this thread that often, but I'm very much looking forward to the new season. The Giants really haven't done much of anything other than secure pitchers and get Miggy and stuff like that. As for the A's, I have a question. They've been sprucing up the Bullpen quite well with Fuentes and Balfor. However, other than Matsui, have they really done much in terms of Power in the Lineup? I remember last year they play in one of the more home run friendly ball parks in the Majors (Even if it is a bit of a dump), but their home run numbers were not as great as they could be. Yeah they're taking a model from the Giants and going with Pitching, but you need a bit of offense in there somewhere.

The overpaying for Soriano and signing this washed up slugger screm knee jerk reactions to losing out on some of the big free agents.

At least they're doing something though. Damned Mets have been quiet as a mouse all winter. So they'll trot out the same shitty team from last year with no Santana for the first half. Whee!

The Jays may have just hosed the Angels. Vernon Wells traded for Mike Napoli?

Last year, Wells hit 31 HR with 88 RBIs, for $18 million. Napoli hit 26 HR with 68 RBI for $3.6 million. I'd call that a win.

EDIT: Seems as though Juan Riveria is going to the Jays, as well. I cannot believe we got rid of that contract, AND got two decent players in return. Well done, Alex Anthopoulos.

EDIT the second: Wow, and the Angels are taking the entirety of Wells's remaining $86 million contract. A.A. fleeced 'em good.

Sounds to me like the Angels are in panic mode after losing out on pretty much every one of their targeted players this offseason.

Crasnick was talking about the Ramirez & Damon story on ESPN News tonight.

He was talking about how Damon could play left even though he had lost a lot of speed but "he never could throw". Laughed my a$$ off on that one.
