MLB Chatter 2008

does anyone know what this "MLB New York January 1st 2009" is, as seen on some billboards around post season stadiums?

my only guess is that its to do with the two new New York stadiums

Nothing personal against the Phillies or BoSox. But they have won a World Series at some recent point.
Unless you are looking at it from a geologic time frame, 1980 was hardly recent.
That's still more recently than the Rays, which gives Tampa the edge for my preference. And there is still the joy of Torre being in the series and the Yankees having to live with it.

OTOH, on Dan Patrick's show this evening it was pointed out that if it's a Philly/Boston QS, you have the whole JD Drew angle to go with. And JS's apparently quite the persona non-grata in Philly according to what I heard.

I was at some Philly/ Boston games earlier this year. Say want you want about Philly fans, but they can boo with the best of them. Every single at bat was just a pure bashfest against Drew. It was funny when he hit a homer, and everyone in the stadium, instead of shutting up, just booed louder.

We boo both out of hatred and respect. We have some good reasons to hate J.D. Drew.

Oh trust me, I know about him refusing to sign after he was drafted. Didn't he inform the team however, he would not sign for under a certain amount when he was drafted...and then they drafted him anyway.

That's MLB Network (not MLB New York). January '09 is when they launch, I believe.
thanks, seems like an odd day to launch a MLB network, would think it would launch closer to first day of the season, or the start or spring training

Speaking of MLB Network, they will carry some of the WBC games in March. Go Puerto Rico

Personally I think it should launch on Feb 15 when pitchers and catchers report. Perhaps they want to give themselves a little lead time to work out the kinks.

Tampa Bay already has a new stadium planned,

sounds about right to me, and yeah there is no harm in going on air early to as you says "work out the kinks"

The other thing is that the hot stove league has become as much of an interest as the actual season. You've got the GM meetings in December, then the holidays, then a lot of signings after the first of the year. They may want to capitalize on some of that.

I am taking credit for Chase Utley's HR. You see, I pointed a sonic screwdriver toy at the TV right before he swung the bat, so clearly it was my influence that inspired him to tie the game.

I just read an ESPN article that basically said that Ultey and Burrell's homers shouldn't have been homers (because CBP is so small) but that Manny Ramirez double should have been a HR and the Dodgers should have won. And then there's this yahoo getting paid to bash my city. I'm starting to get frustrated by the media. They rarely give the Phils any credit - if they win, it's because their park is small or the Mets collapsed and if they lose, haha told you so.

Stark's article is interesting, becuase yes CBP is a launching pad for balls. Still no excuse for the Dodgers though, they were playing in the same park, and would have to hit the ball just as far.

As for the second article...I've read stuff by him before. He is a fucking moron. I take anything he says with a grain of salt.

I checked back on Simers and today he wrote that the Phils and Rays should lay down and lose in recognition of baseball's need for a Red Sox-Dodgers WS. You're right, this guy is a fucking moron.

Stark writes 'what if?' Manny hit a HR instead of a double - how about, what if Manny actually ran instead of admiring his hit? He gets to third and scores on the passed ball and the Dodgers probably win. But no, to criticize the work ethic of Manny is sacriledge. Instead it's, oh, it's not actually Lowe's fault, because in LA Utley would have been out.
