MLB Chatter 2008

If Griffey is smart, he'll take it. I remember reading a couple months back (when he was still on my fantasy team) he said he was open to being traded depending on the circumstances.

Liek I said, I hate to see him go. Despite the sometimes rough going it's been in Cincinnati, he is still a good representative of baseball. If going to the White Sox gets him one more shot at the post-season, I'm happy for him. The intriguing thing right now is what the Reds might get in return.

The 3-team deal to get Bay is what I keep hearing most often so far. My biggest concern is how it would affect team chemistry. On the surface, it seems as if it would improve it for the Red Sox. Do you agree?

Yes, 100%. Manny has been a great hitter over the years, but I don't think everyone has said he is a great teammate. Im not saying he was ever a bad one, but the lived to the beat of his own drum in the clubhouse, and never became the group of clubhouse leaders, i.e. Tek, Lowell, Ortiz, Beckett, Wakefield and in the future Pedroia and Youk. He always seemed to be on the outside of things. I know some fans of the Sox are freaking out about this, but I believe it will gel this team.

Manny has been on and off for years, but some of the incidents this year are much more serious then others. There comes a point where enough is enough. Manny knows the Sox probably won't pick up his option, and for the first time in his life, Manny actually has work for his money, and work for his contract, and he is acting like a crybaby.

I appreciate what he have in Manny, and what we might be giving up. He is HOF hitter, and I have cheered for him during his time here, but it is time for a change.

My god does this trade have shades of the Nomar deal in 04 though.

The way it's going now, with Manny having litterally quit on the team, and stomping up and down like a child, there's no way it could get worse. He needs to go. Maybe the Sox will take the new blood in and get a boost like in 2004...

It's that very Garciaparra deal that made me think of all of this. I don't recall jsut who the Sox got in return, though. Even so, how often do you see a move like that with such an iconic figure turn into a sport championship?

Well through a multitude of trades that deadline they got Orlando Cabrera, and Doug Meintkavietz (Dougie Alphabets), two critical pieces of the Red Sox 04 Championship.

I had to follow the game yesterday on Gamechannel. I didn't see Manny's sign until this morning.

That was pretty lame.

JMHO

Well, the quote about the Sox not deserving him was worse than lame.

I'm talking about the "I'm being traded for Brett Favre" sign he held up in the dugout...

Griffey has approved the trade to the White Sox. Apparently, it's for two players, infielder Danny Richar and pitcher Nick Masset.

One thing the article brings up that I hadn't considered was the potential for yes another trade coming as a results of this. The Sox have an awful lot of outfielders. I don't know how well Griffey would do in CF, but he's not exactly an invalid out there.

I'm disappointed to see him go before he passed Sosa for 5th place on the all-time HR list.

Damn, Tim Hudson needs Tommy John surgery, so he's most likely out for the season. That sucks for the Braves because he's their best pitcher.

Well, it happened, and I am pretty happy. We got a good LF in Jason Bay, and I hope he can contribute down the stretch. Hansen I don't much care about, but we did loose Brandon Moss, which sucks. All in all, I think Bay will help the Sox a good amount.

Gotta love that trading deadline!

Servo, I'd consider that a big win for the Sox. Bay's numbers offensively right now seem comparable to Manny's, and he's a fair sight better than Ramirez defensively. Sems pretty obvious he'll be a vast improvement in the clubhouse. The only are in which the Sox take a hit is losgin Manny's post season experience. Bay hasn't been to the playoffs, and playing under those conditions can be hella different.

relieved that something went down with that. Will miss Manny as a talent, but he was also a huge problem, and it got bad enough that it was hurting the team.

Also think Boston overpaid quite a bit. Seems like trading Manny, paying his full contract ($7mil), plus having to add 2 players (Hansen and Moss) is a very big haul for Jason Bay. Would have thought that Manny, for free, should have been enough to get it done. Thought that when we added 2 players, we'd at least be getting that reliever back that was talked about (Grabow). That said, didn't give up anything special, and Bay has another year on his contract for only 7.5 mil, so it's not all bad.

Hopefully this is the spark to get things going again for the Sox.

Marlins are gonna feel pretty stupid over cheaping out at the last minute if they don't pull through and make the post season. They could have had Manny instead of the Dodgers, and for about the same prospect level, so if they lose out to the Mets or Phillies, it's their own damned fault. Them and their cheap owner...

Breaking news: The Reds are trading Griffey Jr to the White Sox, pending Jr.'s approval. Much as I hate to see him go, this may be his best bet to get back to the post-season before his playing days are over.

I like Griffey. As much of a feel-good story it was for him to play for the Reds, I hope he's successful wherever he goes. It'll dramatically drop the changes of me ever seeing him play live again, but that's about my biggest complaint (plus, when I saw him live before, he was playing against the Phillies, so I wasn't supposed to root for him).

Based upon some extra information I picked up this afternoon, I'm thinking that this trade comes at a good time for both Griffey and the Reds. Apparently, there have been some clubhouse issues and a throat-slash gesture recently, so a parting of the ways is to be expectexd. I still wish him the best, though.
