MLB Chatter 2008

General consensus seems to be that firing him was understandable, though many do disagree with at least that part.

I would have kept him. But the team has been in a funk for over a year now. We're nearly halfway through the season and they are teetering on whether they are a long shot to contend this year or a lost clause. The players are going through the motions and the managerial distractions can't help.

I can see the move. Sometimes it shakes a team up. Sometimes a new message get them going after tuning out the old manager. I don't think anyone can really complain about the fact he was fired.

How it was handled was ridiculous though.

I just figured out they've been saying it was ridiculous to do it at 3:00 am... but it was actually mindnight on the west coast. :wtf:

The 2008 New York Mets. Finding ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

*cries* Bad Mets! No cookies for them. :(

David Letterman sure loves to make fun of them...

Top Ten ways the Mets can turn things around

Jetpacks :guffaw:tainted To-Maters:guffaw:

Speaking of the Mets, has anyone seen this? It's from Last Saturdays Mets/Rangers game that got rained out. Some of the Rangers players decided to use the tarp as a gigantic slip and slide. The cool this is that the Mets fans in Shea were cheering for them http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWbEypE2d2g

The Mets came back and beat the Angels in extra innings. David Wright got a huge RBI against K-Rod when at times he couldn`t buy a hit off of rightys, Ollie Perez pitched a tough 6 innings, Jose Reyes was doing his thing, Easley with a game wining home run and Sanchez and Wagner were on point.

I`m having a hard time believing that this team is the Mets. Like Jerry said “Gangsters get on the field, ladies get on the bus.” I still can`t believe we actually won this game. I really hope I`m not dreaming.

I was thinking about that too. I still don't like the way he was fired, but it really was after the game after midnight. Of course it's all east coast bias but still.

Curt Schilling just announced that his attempt to come back from the shoulder injury without surgery isn't working, so he's having the surgery. Means he's definitely not coming back this season, and it could be a career-ending move...

well, he IS 41, so I guess he made a pretty good run at it. Several World Series rings, WS MVP, a dominant post-season record over his career, over 3000 Ks, had a good career.

And if his last game ever pitched ends up being Game 2 of the 2007 World Series, and he was the winning pitcher in that game (and his team got the ring at the end), is that really the worst note to go out on?

If Schilling never plays another game at at the MLB level, yeah.... that game would hardly be a bad note to end upon. It's just that you hate to see such a great run come to an end, no matter that it's inevitable for all athletes. Even so, as long as he doesn't end it playing as sadly as Willie Mays appeared... I'm alright with the end like this.

Yeah, that's inevitable, isn't it?

Great baseball players don't go to Cooperstown. They go to ESPN.

I`d love to see Schilling interview Hank Steinberner for BBTN. The ESPN studios wouldn`t survive all the hot air coming out of their mouthes.

I'm glad the Braves didn't get embarrassed by the Mariners. It should have been a sweep, but I'll take two. I'll chalk that first one up to the Mariners being "fired up".

Looks like they're still cookin' even tonight.

Tell the truth though... do you think they have the chops to make it to the World Series this season?

Ditto. Schill gets a tip of the cap from me no matter how his career ends.

Holy shit, the Reds are having a hell of a time with shortstops this year.

They start of the season with their starter Alex Gonzalez on the DL. Jeff Keppinger comes in and hits like crazy, but gets injured. Then Jerry Hairston Jr. steps in and hits well, but HE gets injured. Then Paul Janish comes and HE gets injured. And THEN Jolbert Cabrera gets injured last night! So what do they have to do? They bring both Keppinger and Janish back early to mix it up tonight. Good grief!

Oh, and Alex Gonzalez is still injured.
