MLB Chatter 2008

Yeah, that pissed me off, too. Cost Tim Hudson a win after a very good start (and I need that win for my fantasy team this week!).

Chase Utley goes 2 for 3 and gets a triple RBI. Yup, definitely not MVP material. Rollins also gets a 2-run HR and Lidge and Gordon are lights out.

I keep waiting for the inevitable Phillies collapse. They have a .633 winning percentage for the past month and have gone 14-4 over the past few weeks. Logic dictates that they cannot keep this up, and yet they show no signs of slowing.

You said that if he kept his current stats pace that there was no reason why he shouldn't become third Phillie MVP in three years. My point is that Lance Berkman has better stats than Utley does now.

Batting Average, hits, runs, slugging, on base, walks, and walks to strikeouts ratio. Okay, the last one isn't something a lot of people look at, but I think it's an important stat.

Well, I guess it's a question of which is better, runs or RBIs. It's tricky because, even if he hits a lot more doubles (he's not a triples hitter, so that's all slugging percentage will indicate there), he might get stranded, so his run production has to do with the people who follow him as well. But, on the other hand, Utley needs someone to get on for him to knock in. Still, you have to factor in importance of defense (2nd baseman vs. 1st baseman), so it's even more complicated.

The point is I never said that Utley had no competition. I said if he keeps this up there's a good chance he'll be the MVP, which would be remarkable because he'd be the third Phillie in three years to have that honor.

I would just like to know what the Red Sox have done with the body of JD Drew, and who is the man impersonating him in right field, because my god the man is hitting for power, hitting for average, and playing great right field defense. It cant be JD Drew, can it?

All I can say is, with Papi gone for a while, keep it up man!

Phils beat the Braves 6-3 in a quality start from Adam Eaton of all people. They're 13 games above .500, just swept the Atlanta Braves, and are 8-2 in their last 10. Don't look now, but they are actually really hot.

Can they keep it up? It's the Phillies, so that remains to be seen, but I can't remember the last time they've been this good, that's for sure.

Well the incident stems from Weds nights game. Early in the game, Crisp stole second, and slid in head first. Bartlett covered the bag with his knee, which is a no-no if a baserunner is sliding in head first. Crisp thought it was rotten, so when he was on first and tried to steal later in the game, he took out whoever was covering second to send a message. Problem was it was Akanori Iwamura covering the bag, not Bartlett. So the game continues till TB makes a pitching change, and all of a sudden, Maddon the TB manager is yelling at Crisp, who is in the dugout, from the mound.

So I figured today Crisp would get hit, cause from TB's perspective it looked like Crisp started it, but to Crisp it was started on a cheap play by Bartlett. So when he got he go hit in the first like everyone expected...he charged the mound, because he thought it was over, even though TB thought it was not.

And the Youk, Manny thing? I donno, its rare to see in the Sox clubhouse, especially since Tito has been there. Maybe a bit too much testosterone. Im sure disagreements happen through the year, and according to Tito's postgame comments it was not a big deal, and had already been settled.

I was rather amused that Shields--who apparently was a college boxer--threw the first punch and missed.

I was finishing up dinner with some friends about 200 ft away from the park when this broke out, so didn't see it live. I did get to watch the rest of the game live, including Ellsbury's fantastic diving catch.

Here's a shot of Lansdowne Street after the game.

Well, my Twins really stunk it up this weekend: Gave up at least 10 runs in each of their first 3 games against the White Sox. Hopefully they can redeem themselves a little in the final game of the series today.

When two players have comparable stats, MLB has a history of giving MVP awards to the player on a playoff team. A lot will depend on where the Astros and Phillies finish at the end of the year, and whether either player suffers any long term injuries.

Ryan Howard was a notable exception to the playoff team portion of that. I recall hearing a lot of media types saying that Pujols should win the NL MVP for 2006 simply because the Cards were in the postseason (living in Toronto, I didn't get the Philly media bias). Many journalists seem to be of the opinion that if your team didn't make the playoffs, then you couldn't be all that valuable. Don't really think I agree with that, but then I don't get to vote. I actually think that Rollins' preseason prediction last year, that the Phillies were the "team to beat" in the NL East, won him the MVP because he backed it up and they pulled it out when the Mets stumbled.

Last year Utley was having a better year than Rollins, and was garnering some media attention as an MVP candidate before he was injured in a collision with Aaron Rowan in the outfield. Bye bye MVP talk after Chase missed more than a month. Anyway, MVP discussion at this point is a little premature IMO. We haven't even hit the all-star break yet... so far Utley and Berkman have played a less than half of the season. Chipper freakin' Jones is hitting well over .400-- if the Braves get hot and he manages to keep it up (and I think he can), who is to say that the first guy to hit .400 in decades won't win it?

I agree that playoffs shouldn't be a consideration for MVPs because no single player can take a team to the playoffs no matter how good they are.

As for Chipper, as much as I love him, there's a major roadblock that he'll have to overcome: his health. He has already had a couple of minor injuries this season (including one right now, a minor tear in his quad, which will mean he'll miss a couple of games this week). If he can stay healthy he might be able to do it. However, it should be noted that the last person who had a batting average over .400 this far into the season was Paul O'Neill in 1997 (I think I can't find the news item where I read this) and his average was higher than Chipper's is now.

Wow, that was one hell of a comeback from a 5-1 deficit to beat the Mets 9-5!

I guess the Diamondbacks simply had enough of losing on that particular day.

Whatever they did to him, they should go back to that well and get a Julio Lugo impersonator while they are at it.

JD Drew has been amazing lately, really caught fire when they needed it most, and is taking well to the 3-hole right now. If he keeps it up, may be worth slotting him into the 5-hole when Papi comes back, and pushing Lowell to 6th. Would also give them a really nice L-R combo:

Ellsbury - L
Pedroia - R
Ortiz - L
Manny - R
Drew - L
Lowell - R
Youkilis - R
Varitek - Switch hitter
Lugo - neither

Nice problem to have, trying to bat Youkilis 7th or 8th. Kinda like in 2004, where we had Bill Mueller batting 8th or 9th, after he won the batting crown in 2003 :D
