MLB Chatter 2008

Thanks to the Rox pounding Tim Lincecum for 6 runs yesterday, Johan now leads the NL in ERA thanks to his big time game against Chicago and he is unbeaten since June 28.

All I gotta say is Santana for Cy Young.

^ I don't have the same man crush on him you do, but I am SO glad the Mets got him. He's worth every penny of that contract.

Plus he's set to start the season finale in the event it matters.

Who's pitching tonight by the way?

Anyone else think it's funny that the Reds have played all playoff contenders since 9/5? And they've actually won every series!!
raises hand .... I was thinking the same thing earlier. If Milwaukee ends up missing the playoffs, the Reds will be a large part of why. Heck, the Reds are already a large part of why the D-Backs won't make it this year.

Since nobody has brought this up, I think I will. ESPN is reporting that the Tampa Bay Rays have sold out games 1 and 2 of the ALDS. Its great to see that franchise finally start to do big things. I hope they make it to the World Series and lose to the Mets.

Speaking of the Mets if anybody cares tommorow Pedro Martinez pitches against Rich Harden to end the Cubs series. (I still think you have one good start Dro.)

That's exactly what I'm hoping for. My favorite team vs. the feel-good story of the season.

Zambrano vs. Perez tonight could be a good one, and it's on ESPN so I can actually watch it to boot. I feel better about Ollie than I used to, but it's always a little bit of an adventure until you see what kind of stuff he's got on a given day. Hopefully today is the 10 K's and 2 runs in 7 innings as opposed to the 6 walks and 4 runs in 4 1/3.

Also, with the Cubs all set, I wonder if Lou pulls Zambrano after 5 or so innings. I can hope.

Hmm, Phils haven't been looking so hot these last two games.

Atlanta has finally decided that they are sick of bending over for the Phantic and are actually playing for once. Its nice to see a bunch of grown men show some pride.

I guess I know which Ollie we got now. Fuck. His actual line, I wasn't far off!

"The left-hander allowed five earned runs on six hits and five walks in 41/3 innings, squandering a 5-1 lead in the process. "

I went from joy to misery in about 15 minutes. It was fun to watch Zambrano throw a temper tantrum and melt down on the mound. Just when I thought they were about to blow a great chance with the bases loaded, Delgado hits a grand slam.

Then Perez hands it right back. I don't really want him back next year. He will always get a chance with a team because he has such talent when he's on, but he's too damned inconsistent.

One more win by the Twins and they'll move back into first in the AL Central! Finishing out at home, I think they have a good chance to win the division. I had a blast at Tuesday's game- now I regret giving away my tickets to Sunday's game.

That's right. You did say earlier that you were going to that game! What was the atmosphere like? Man, I've never been to a playoff game in any sport except at the high school level.

And to think ... the Twins are in this position even after Santana leaving.

The atmosphere was great- even though it was a regular season game, it felt like a playoff game. There was over 35,000 at the game, and everyone was going nuts. It was nice to finally have good seats (row 28, just off 3rd base)- much better than when we watched a 2006 playoff game from the very top row of the Metrodome!

I went to game 2 of the NLCS in 2006 at Shea between the Mets and Cardinals. I was supposed to see game 1, but there was a rainout and it changed what game the tickets were good for. The kicker is that I could have had tickets to see game 7, but having never seen a MLB playoff game before, wanted to see a game I knew would be played.

The atmosphere was electric from the time I got onto the subway until the game ended. It was so loud and so many people were on their feet cheering the stadium shook. Every pitch was so intense.

I went to a few Knicks first round playoff games about 10 years ago. They were fun but nowhere near the level of excitement as the Mets game. By that point, the Knicks were coming down from their glory days and were a mediocre team in the first round.

Here's an article about Hank Stienbrenner complaining that is isn't fair that Joe Torre and the Dodgers will go to the playoffs and the Yankees are staying at home:

http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/70490

"The biggest problem is the divisional setup in major league baseball. I didn't like it in the 1970s, and I hate it now," Steinbrenner wrote. "Baseball went to a multidivision setup to create more races, rivalries and excitement. But it isn't fair. You see it this season, with plenty of people in the media pointing out that Joe Torre and the Dodgers are going to the playoffs while we're not. "This is by no means a knock on Torre - let me make that clear-but look at the division they're in. If L.A. were in the AL East, it wouldn't be in the playoff discussion. The AL East is never weak."
I wonder if he thought it was so unfair in 2000, when the Yanks made it in, and won the World Series, despite having the 9th best record in baseball, and 5th in the AL.
