MLB 2021 season: Corn-Driven Humidity

OTOH, they could spend $202M like the Spankees and still miss the playoffs, or the WS for 12 years.

Spending on the right players is the key, but even then they usually screw you over and hit .200 once they get their money.

Giants got Kris Bryant at the end of the deadline. Good deal by Farhan. I also liked that the Giants did something after what the Dodgers did last night.

Batting .200 is what Gallo is all about!

Yes, but with a 162-game avg. of 41 HR and 90 rbi. Those last 2 stats will go up in Yankee Stadium. MLB network showed a half dozen long flyouts in Texas this season that would have been homers in the Bronx.

Yeah, yeah...bleah.

I much rather have a reliable hitter that wasn't dependent on the long ball.

I've seen some amazing catches in my time, but nothing quite like this one!

@Timby Is there anything here you like as long termers? Should have been at least one top 3 prospect IMO, possibly from the Ginats or Emts.

Madrigal is interesting in that he has decent speed and lots of gap power (though no long-distance power). I'll be interested to see how well he rebounds from the hamstring injury.

Caleb Kilian is a fascinating get and it makes me feel a tiny bit better about the Bryant trade. He's a fireballer who never walks anyone and from scouting reports he's developing a fourth pitch, which means he's going to be a middle reliever at worst but more likely a mid-rotation starter.

The problem is that minor league scouting reports are really tough to rely on this year, because Minor League Baseball didn't play a single game in 2020. So it's hard to tell how a player is evolving. Vizcaino, for example, I have no idea what the fuck to make of him. I've already said that Bryce Ball projects as a DH. Anderson Espinoza is playing his first season since 2016 because he's had two Tommy John surgeries.

Also, Jed Hoyer didn't waste time--as I predicted--planting a "we tried" story with the Tribune. From Megan Montemurro, the Tribune's Cubs beat writer:

Jed Hoyer said:
"We made offers to everyone that I believe will hold up exceptionally well & we weren't able to reach deals. Does that frustrate me? It does. I know we put our best foot forward & I'm proud of offers we made."

But with Madrigal on a one-year contract, why would you even want him included if you were the Cubs?

Madrigal doesn't hit free agency until 2027, and doesn't even begin his arb years until 2023. He's cost-controlled for another five years, that's why you take him in the trade.

OK, then google lied. They have him on a "1 year contract", whici didn't make much sense

Mets won't sign their 1st round pick, supposedly over injury concerns, definitely a blessing in disguise for his arm, if he's not hurt now he would be after they got him.

I kind of feel that both parties are partially to blame, here, which I know is a radical departure from my standard "fuck owners, pay labor" stance. Kumar Rocker was left out for an obscene number of pitches (139, I think) very early in Vanderbilt's season, and that beating just so happened to coincide with a significant drop in his velocity (if I were Rocker, I'd be pissed if a manager destroyed my arm while I was playing for free). He declined to participate in the pre-draft MRI program--not terribly unusual, most players projected to go in the top 5 or so do--but he slid to the Mets because of widespread injury concerns. I don't blame the Mets for being cautious.

That being said, Rocker has two more years of NCAA eligibility (because of the COVID year) and I don't blame him for refusing to take a lowball offer; the Mets are probably haggling over less money than they are paying Bobby Bonilla every year, and if you have injury concerns about the guy and you don't think he's worth his slot value, then maybe, I don't know, don't take him with that pick?

Baez, Rizzo, and Bryant homered in each of their debuts this weekend. That's first time in the modern era players traded from one team has done that.

The Giants won the series against the Astros, and on top of taking 5 of 7 from the Dodgers recently, what a streak that is. The next two months are going to be fun.

Abraham Toro is the first player in the modern era to homer in the final two games with his ballclub and then homer in the first two games for his new ballclub. He's also the first player to homer for and against a single team on consecutive days.

This weekend has been one of those special, unforgettable moments having the Jays back home in Toronto. It felt like three playoff games, especially today with Berrios all fired up.
