At least a foot is outside the strike zone...........I'm looking at you Michael Conforto.
And while we're on the subject, I don't ever want to hear another fucking word from Mr. Laser Beam or anyone else about the behavior of Philadelphia sports fans.
Wow, how horribly petty.Tonight's Yankees-Rays game was paused for over two minutes after irate Yankees fans started throwing baseballs at the field; the Yankees, who now have a solid lock on last place in AL East, were behind 8-2 in the 8th inning when the shenanigans started. There's something to be said for cardboard cutouts in the stands instead of people.
Ah yes, that old chestnut. You are right, who can ever give shit to fans that boo Santa Claus. Go Philly!!!![]()
Ah yes, that old chestnut.![]()
As with most things it's a little more complex than that they simply booed Santa...Yeah, but it was mostly the Eagles fans.![]()
Source: MassLive.comThe incident in question occurred during a game on Dec. 15, 1968. The Eagles stunk that year and were heading to halftime of what would wind up being a loss in their final game to cap off a 2-12 season.
As Boston Globe writer (and Philadelphia native) Brian J. White described last year, fans were angry in the stands, which hadn’t been properly cleared. Meanwhile, the halftime show was supposed to be a 50-piece brass band welcoming Santa Claus onto the field. Except their Santa Claus got stuck in New Jersey because of a snowstorm (now that’s a nightmare).
So, of course, the Eagles’ solution to the problem was to pull a random fan from the stands who happened to be wearing a semblance of a Santa costume -- little more than a Santa hat and a fake beard.
“He was the worst-looking Santa I’d ever seen," former Eagles PR director Jim Gallagher said in “The Great Philadelphia Fan Book.” "Bad suit, scraggly beard. I’m not sure whether he was drunk, but he appeared to be.”
That man was Frank Olivo, who was 19 years old at the time and would go on to have his involvement in this incident be cited in the first line of his obituary in 2015.
With the band playing “Here Comes Santa Claus," Olivo ran downfield, and all appeared to be taken in stride. That was until he reached the endzone and was pelted by dozens of snowballs.
“When I hit the end zone, and the snowballs started, I was waving my finger at the crowd, saying ‘You’re not getting anything for Christmas,'” Olivo said in 2005.
But to hear White and former Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Stan Hochman tell it, the fans weren’t angry at Santa. No, they were angry at the team who put on a fancy haltfime show instead of investing in a good team or bothering to shovel out the stands.
“The fans pelted Santa Claus with snowballs because they would have needed a bazooka to reach the owner’s box,” Hochman wrote.
As with most things it's a little more complex than that they simply booed Santa...

Sadly, it's the go-to story when people want to talk shit about Philadelphia sports fans, when they really aren't much better or worse than passionate sports fans in any other major city. (Especially since Citizens Bank Park and Lincoln Financial Field replaced Veterans' Stadium; you don't hear about nearly as much rowdyism now that they have two very nice facilities for the Phillies and Eagles to play in.)Damn, I never heard of that story before. That's a different kind of petty to drag out a 50-plus-year old story without any kind of context.
I can't imagine how obnoxious it is to deal with that. Ugh.Sadly, it's the go-to story when people want to talk shit about Philadelphia sports fans, when they really aren't much better or worse than passionate sports fans in any other major city. Oh, for fuck's sake... are they trying to make me stop watching? In other vomit-inducing news, Joe Buck will be guest hosting Jeopardy! this summer.![]()
