Mixtape Thread

I used to make my own off the radio back in the 80s, but now I only have one "mix", and that's partly because it was provided as a single monster mp3. I'll give you the list, see if you can guess what it's from:

Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Love Missle F-111
Kaye/Montenegro - (Theme from) I Dream of Jeanie
Yello - Oh Yeah
The Flowerpot of Men - Beat City
Big Audio Dynamite - BAD
John Williams - (Theme from) Star Wars
The Dream Academy - Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want
Wayne Newton - Danke Shoen
The Beatles - Twist and Shout
Zapp - Radio People
Blue Room - I'm Afraid
General Public - Taking the Day Off
The Dream Academy - The Edge of Forever
The (English) Beat - March of the Swivelheads

(I left a couple off since they're specific to the reference.)

If "Oh Yeah" and "Danke Shoen" didn't give it away immediately, it's from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Darth Mojo (who's done effects work on Trek, Galactica and other stuff) put together this mix with sound bytes from the movie. If the link still works, you can download this from his blog post here. The link to the actual mp3 is in a yellow link near the bottom of the post, named "Ferris_Bueller_OST", and is about 80Mb.

I used to be a regular at a roots/dub reggae night in my town. Good summer music... and some of the real classics are accessible on mp3 these days. Here's a mixtape at honest-to-goodness mixtape length.

One of the grandmasters of power pop, I still don't think he's fully gotten the credit he deserves.

No, he hasn't. But I love his collaboration with Susanna Hoffs. That's almost credit by 80s pop association.

On a tangent, I think "pop" music, generally speaking, gets a bad rep as it is. There's a quote from Eddie Van Halen (which I can't properly source at the moment), where he said: "If it sounds good, it is good." Which validates a lot of pop music (Spice Girls notwithstanding). Matthew Sweet certainly falls into that description.

Indeed. So too the Atlantics, the Buzzcocks, Cheap Trick (it took me a long time to fully realize why Cheap Trick were so highly regarded, but I have), the Exploding Hearts and so on... powerpop is one of those sub-genres (like dub reggae, like country) that I had to grow into and just, finally, let myself appreciate because dammit, it sounds good. :techman:

^ Looks interesting, is there an mp3 somewheres? I could use something a little different from the rather generic club / electro mixes I'm currently working out to.

FACT put up a series of articles and mixes about the 100 Best Albums of the Seventies. The articles, with links to the streamable mixes, are here. I'm listening to the top 20 bracket right now and it's all manner of boss.
