Missing 32" Enterprise finally found...

For people who want to compare, they could take some of the detailed photos from the big model to post next to the 33" model, and take some detailed photos of the 33" to display at the Smithsonian.

Because there's value in making it convenient for Americans who don't happen to live in Washington DC to see this marvelous part of our heritage.

Although the number of Americans who don't happen to live in Los Angeles is almost as great as the number of Americans who don't happen to live in DC. Indeed, given US population distribution, most Americans would have to travel farther to reach LA than they would to reach DC.

I'm not advocating moving the large model to LA. Two models, two coasts. Makes sense to me.

I mean that even with two museums in DC and LA, that would be "convenient" for only about the 4% of the US population that lives within one of those two metropolitan areas. I mean, yeah, it would be an improvement to have two distinct regions of the country served, but it would still be a lengthy interstate trip either way for most of the population, so calling it "convenient" is an overstatement.

Yeah, that's the same place that dropped and smashed the one-of-a-kind NASA HL-10 lifting body, made famous in "The Six Million Dollar Man." Can't wait to see how they handle the Enterprise; maybe put it in the bathroom upside down.

I didn't hear about this accident. As a dyed in the wool Six Million Dollar Man fan, it comes as bad news. Also I'm having trouble finding out more about it. Any links for us?

I didn't hear about this accident.

It would seem most people haven't. I've only found two mentions of it on line, and one of them is the person you're asking quoting the other one.

Times like this, I miss when I was in college and had LexisNexis access through the school library. I'm sure there must've been some news reporting on it at the time, but apparently nothing that made it to the internet.

That is great news, thus far, from Rod.

Interesting debate on where it should ultimately be showcased. I favor Smithsonian, but respect other opinions.

I feel that, eventually, exacting full-size wooden replicas should be made available to the general public. Not necessarily sourced from the Philippines, though. ;)

Or LA is a $170 flight while DC is a $370 flight (chosen arbitrarily from cheapest flights on today's travelocity from Seattle).

I just want the place she docks at to be more than capable of doing her justice. NASM seems like a good bet for that, 1990s restro notwithstanding.

Taking a flight of any length, and dealing with all the rigmarole at airports, does not meet my definition of "convenient."

But why Seattle? That's already much closer to LA than it is to DC, so it doesn't illustrate the point. For a useful comparison, you want to pick a city roughly equidistant between them, like, say, Oklahoma City. There I get about $130 for LA and $170 for DC, which is pretty close. For Kansas City, the largest city that's roughly midway between, I get prices in the low $90 range for both.
