Misses opourtinities in the movie?

I can think of a few homages or dramatic moments that could have been done.

1 I wish the doctor and first officer who were killed on the Enterprise had been called number 1 and Dr Boyce. It wouldn't change the story much but it would be a nod to Pike's crew that we are familiar with.

2 Cupake could have bene Finnegan. Granted they could keep the nickname still if they want. Just change the actor to have a accent similar to what Finnegan had and we would proably get the joke.

3 They should have used Shatner during the Mind meld scene. Would have been fun to get one more Nimoy/Shatner scene and also allow NUKirk to see old Kirk.

4 I would like to see McCoy saying goodbye to his daughter and ex-wife. I've always wanted to see those characters on the bigscreen.

5 Should have seen the destruction of Romulus from Nero's perspective. We needed at least one scene were your heart sort of breaks for the character IMO. Would have gave him more depth. I mean his backstory for being a villian is good, and I liked Countdown, but I felt like the movie could have done a better job with the character.

Gary. Fucking. Mitchell.

He could have been in one scene hanging with Kirk at the Academy, possibly as part of the Kabayashi Maru. And he could have been played by Paul McGillion, instead of having McGillion as the drill sgt.

I thought it would've been cool if like suggested by Jayson that "Cupcake" was Finnegan, Captain Pike could have easily said "Stand down Cadet Finnegan"! Later on in Engineering we could have Kirk mutter to Scotty when they're taken into custody and brought to Spock on the bridge "I thought I had rid myself of this guy...figures Finnegan would end up on board the same ship as me."

Gary Mitchell but I think this has been beaten to death...

Tarsus IV happening but I like the fact that they structured Kirk's character without having using this piece of back story.

I would have liked to seen Carol Marcus...the writers did say that their first draft had a scene where Kirk met Carol and had a relationship with her. Also that William Shatner would have appeared as part of a holographic message that Spock brought with him into the past to convince his younger self to listen to Spock (although I don't know where Spock would've got that message in the first place since Jim was dead already by that time).

Actually, could Kirk meet Carol Marcus in this altered timeline? After all, in the Prime Universe, it was Gary Mitchell who hooked Kirk and Carol up. With no Mitchell in this timeline, Kirk may never meet Carol, David will never be born, and those Klingon bastards will never kill Kirk's son.

Gary Mitchell was the big one. Their relationship would have changed somewhat, as Kirk wouldn't have been an instructor, but they still could have worked it in.

Finnegan doesn't fit in the altered timeline, as Kirk entered the Academy later than in the Prime Universe. Ol' Finnegan would have already graduated.

I mulled over versions of the story that would have integrated Tarsus IV but in the end I think it would have played very well: George Kirk dies, then young Spock. then young Jim Kirk on Tarsus IV? Feels like one too many childhood tragedies to me.

I came to pretty much the same conclusion regarding Tycho IV; they could have made Kirk a Lt. who left Starfleet after Garrovick's death and came back, but it would have taken too long to set up and execute properly, and would have piled tragedy upon tragedy.

Although it's been discussed to death, it also would have been nice for them to use T'Khut for Kirk's marooning instead of the ill-considered shoehorning of Delta Vega.

But now they can still turn up when least expected.

JJ loves flashbacks in "Lost". There is still hope.

I agree about Dr. Boyce (or alternately, Dr. Piper). However, I don't think the first officer was killed; I thought that Spock was the first officer under Pike.

Actually, I would have so preferred Chekov to go on at length about Russia's supposed achievements instead of overkilling the joke with reversal of v and w sounds.

Russia's alleged achievements was the true trademark of Chekov's character in classic Trek. The V&W thing was never dwelled upon until Trek IV, and that's mainly why the "Nuclear Wessels" line was so memorable.

I would have liked a line from Chekov saying that Zephram is a Russian name.
