As for future guy, the only reason I doubt it's a romulan is that I believe that the empire and the federation will be allies in the distant future, so why go back and hurt an ally

Fair enough.

By chance, did you ever play the Klingon Academy PC game? The way the Federation is described by the in-character Klingon manual included with the game is chillingly accurate from an outsider's perspective, and is probably how both the Klingons and Romulans see them.

I imagine we would have seen all of the things you wanted had Enterprise gotten a fifth season. They were playing up to the first Starbase in 'Bound' and a wa with the Romulans would definately have involved the rest of the fleet.
