Misfits (E4)

Bob The Skutter

Complete Arse Cleft
In Memoriam
E4's new Super powered teen drama Misfits starts on the 12th of November at 10pm. I know a lot of people round here paint all teen dramas with the same brush and won't be interested, but given how much I've liked Skins I'm definitely going to be watching this and hoping for the best.

Misfits follows five outsiders on community service who get struck by a flash storm and lumbered with special powers.

Hard as nails Kelly (Lauren Socha) can suddenly hear people’s thoughts, shamed sporting hero Curtis (Nathan Stewart Jarrett) discovers he has the ability to turn back time when he regrets something, and party girl Alisha (Antonia Thomas) can send people into a sexual frenzy when they touch her skin. Even painfully shy Simon (Iwan Rheon) can make himself invisible when he feels he’s being ignored, which makes it all the more hard to swallow for smart aleck Nathan (Robert Sheehan), who seems to have been unaffected, much to his dismay.

Unlike their more conventional counterparts, our misfits don’t swap their ankle tags and mobile phones for capes and tights. Instead, they discover what a pain in the arse life can be when you’re stuck with a super power you didn’t want.

The title reminds me of an old cheesy 80s show, Misfits of Science. Interestingly, Misfits of Science is about a group of people who cannot fit in with the rest of society because of their powers, which include a guy who can shrink, a guy who can shoot lightning and run very fast, a girl with telekinetic abilities (Courtney Cox!) and an ice man.

^Maybe it was an influence, people keep calling it a cheap knock off of Heroes but besides the characters having "super powers" I don't see any similarities.

Don't think Misfits of Science ever made it over to this side of the pond. Maybe on satellite at some point, but nowhere I ever spotted it.

Well after the first episode my impressions are that there's some bad acting, some bad dialogue and the dogs thoughts were just juvenile.
But despite that I can see some glimmers of potential there, and I did like some little things about it, so I'll give it a couple more episodes to impress me.

I have to admit that I didn't like the look of it from the trailers, so I didn't watch. I may give it a go at some point.

Teen dramas are definitely a lot different on the other side of the pond... Profanity is one thing (I think American TV has always been too prudish there) but going by the preview for next week with nudity.

I gotta say if Gossip Girl delivered with nudity I'd tune into it ;)

Check out Skins if you like teen drama.

I can't see a US network picking this one up, its just not DrWho and it probably has too much nudity for US television

BBC America might, they showed Skins, but then again they've just been told they have to stick to shows the BBC would be happy to show at home, so I don't know.

Overall I'm enjoying the show. I'm happy enough to keep watching it.

UM. look at the credits.

Everyones "powers' are depicted by cartoon.

Nathan has a wolf for his shadow.

Nathan from Misfits vs Nathan from Heroes?

Heroes has no meat.

It's smaller story, but at least it's a story.

I bet BBC Three would love to have a successful teen drama, as well thought of as Skins, Inbetweeners or Misfits.

I mean Spooks: Code 9, not exactly a big hit.

Being Human was 6 episodes over a year ago.

Marvelous as it was, there is a statute of limitations on these things.

No, Being Human was on at the start of the year, and a pilot the year before. The second series is in production now and will have 8 more episodes.

Well this week's ep was your standard "go back and try to fix the past only to make things worse" episode. But I thought it worked well enough, even if it did try to shoehorn in every character for no real reason.
I'm actually starting to like all the characters now, and even starting to hope it comes back for another series.
