Sorry for the delay in getting this contest up.

Our theme for this week is darkness. You can post anything you like related to this theme, such as places at night, images of the night sky, dark colours, dark chocolate, etc. You can even enter an empty black square if you'd like. (Just, y'know, don't all do that...)*

All the usual rules will apply: maximum image size of 200 x 200 pixels, maximum file size of 1 MB, no media images, and must abide by the board's image policy. Contest will be open for about a week.

I'll start us off with...

The first ever image of a black hole, a celestial object with gravity so strong, that not even light can escape.

Have fun! :techman:

* On second thought, this would actually be kinda funny.

My favourite character from The Order of The Stick - The Monster in the Dark:

So... I've been trying to figure out if this is a violation of the "no media" rule or not. Granted, it's definitely not a TV show or movie, but it is from a published webcomic. So it seems that at the very least, it's in a bit of a grey area (somewhat appropriate for this theme, I guess). I don't recall if anything similar has come up before, in order to set a precedent.

That being said, I have no idea if the image itself is taken directly from the webcomic, or if it is fan art of a character in the webcomic. (I have a relative who does art based on another webcomic, so I know this is something that happens.) Since we normally allow works of art (paintings, drawings, etc), I am inclined to allow it. However, if any other entrants feel this would be inappropriate or unfair, let me know before the poll goes up, and we can discuss further.

The image was taken from the webcomic's own wikipedia and is based on an original by the artist. I am not certain if it ever appeared in the comic since episodes 1-999 are no longer available (the monster appeared mostly in the first 300 strips)

Sorry - I completely forgot that webcomics are a sort of medium. I withdraw the entry and shall think of another. Gimme 24 hours, please.

My aunties had a beautiful garden, about a mile away from their house, and in summer we used to have a late supper in the garden, watch the sun set and then go home in the dark along hedgerows sparkling with fireflies =) They are almost extinct now and the garden became a parking lot but just seeing a photo of a firefly (see below) brings back that warm fuzzy feeling and the memory of velvety summer nights.
