Welcome to the all new Miscellaneous Avatar Contest! :)

Inspired by a stupid post seen on the facebook this weeks theme is Armageddon It!

Predictions of apocalyptic events that would result in the extinction of humanity, a collapse of civilization, or the destruction of the planet have been made since at least the beginning of the Common Era. Most predictions are related to Abrahamic religions, often standing for or similar to the eschatological events described in their scriptures. Christian predictions typically refer to events like the rapture, the Great Tribulation, the Last Judgment, and the Second Coming of Christ. Many religious-related end-time events are predicted to occur within the lifetime of the person making the prediction, who often quote the Bible, and in particular the New Testament, as either the primary or exclusive source for the predictions.

Avatars for this contest should feature images of events in recent history that have been interpreted as signs and portents of the apocalypse. For the purposes of this contest recent history will be defined as 1839 - 2020 AD.

I don't have a serious entry. I just saw this and found my opportunity to post this again (really, when will a chance come up again?):

Halley's Comet

From Wikipedia:
The 1910 approach, which came into naked-eye view around 10 April and came to perihelion on 20 April, was notable for several reasons: it was the first approach of which photographs exist, and the first for which spectroscopic data were obtained. Furthermore, the comet made a relatively close approach of 0.15 AU, making it a spectacular sight. Indeed, on 19 May, Earth actually passed through the tail of the comet. One of the substances discovered in the tail by spectroscopic analysis was the toxic gas cyanogen, which led astronomer Camille Flammarion to claim that, when Earth passed through the tail, the gas "would impregnate the atmosphere and possibly snuff out all life on the planet." His pronouncement led to panicked buying of gas masks and quack "anti-comet pills" and "anti-comet umbrellas" by the public.

Last call for entries!

I'll very probably post the poll the day after tomorrow.

Provided the world doesn't end before then. ;)
