You may have heard the recent announcement about the additional four exoplanets discovered in the TRAPPIST-1 system, bringing the total to seven planets, all approximately earth-sized. In honour of that announcement, our theme for this contest is Alien Landscapes. Your entry should depict an image from the surface of another world, either from an actual image of that world, or from an artist's concept image.

Some ground rules:
  • Planets, dwarf planets, asteroids and natural satellites are all OK.
  • Yes, Earth is a planet. No, you may not enter an image of the surface of Earth. :p
  • Entering an image from a planet that has already been entered is OK, but if you do so, please make sure your entry is visually distinct from the previous one(s).
  • Nothing from movies, television, fiction books, video games, etc.
  • Please indicate what your entry is depicting.
  • And of course, the usual avatar rules: Max image size = 200 x 200 pixels, max file size = 1 MB.
Yes, here I go again picking a theme that may not work the greatest at avatar size. Please feel free to also post the full image your entry came from, so the rest of us can be awed by its beauty! :)

I'll start us off with an artist's concept of the surface of the best-known dwarf planet, Pluto:

Have fun! :techman:

what about deep deep space imagery :) say the space between up and down... or mmmmmmm OK planetside there is a lot to see... out there OK I am on it :) like can we use game footage? or what? OH you answered that... my bad,.. OK then do I work in gimp or something I guess right :) I can invent my own planet yep

;)

I plan to spin a globular fractal image with the animate globe function thing in gimp... I know low tech but still maybe merit something ? IDK I have to see if my computer is working at home ...yet,,,I feel like every ten years or so I have to spin some fractal about something or just in space and all... 000

I like Uranus from Miranda Orac sweet
the Mars classic is having gif problems on my end IDK but it is nice too

My imaginary planet will loose points - for lack of time spent but the starting point is three fractal images layered with different visual blend settings //
alpha = planet spinning

Beta = Planet spinning

Gamma = Planet spinning

where do you live? === can you hear me now?
the "alpha" is the submit at 193 by 193 image number 17 plus index weighing in at 220 kb === OK
of course for the non-spinners we have globular

I guess spending time at the seams seemed errrr tacky so we have the line of integration being an obvious orb nor not obb

seamless and larger and more details replacing the Alpha planet we have
delta globular second submit 357kb 197 pixels and 25 images in order of spin..

globular%20gift%204.gif

notice the spin speed... it was changed too... :)
this is the submit with time spent for good work...

I hope this counts enough as Alien... It's the lunar landscape as painted by former astronaut, Alan Bean. What makes Alan Bean's work fascinating and unique is that he paints his experiences, often painting what it felt like to be on that lunar surface. And they're all very photo-realistic. Loads more beautiful paintings on his website. http://www.alanbean.com/

^^ Great choice. I think my favorite of his is the one with the American flag and the olive branch.

It's not a traditional landscape, but you obviously put a lot of effort into it, so I'll allow it. :)

Is it Earth? No? Then we're good. ;)

It looks like I forgot to put an end date in the OP. So just to give everyone advance warning, I'm planning to post the poll Sunday night. So there's just a bit under two days left if anyone else would like to enter!

All the posters from NASA/JPL's "Visions of the Future" retro planetary tour posters, including the newest one, Trappist-1e. It includes Earth, but I figured since it was just one of many different landscapes that would be okay.
