This week's contest is about your home town--either where you live now, where you're moving or where you are from. What place is special, noteworthy, historical, famous or enjoyable where you live? A famous building, historical landmark, favorite tourist destination, an area, company or feature that is strongly associated with your town? It's up to you.

Standard av rules apply: 200 x 200 pixels max, 1 MB max and worksafe.

Let's start with one each; we can always change that later if we have to. The poll will go up next Wednesday.

Here's mine:

When people come to visit, I always take them around the NASA area and the Johnson Space Center.

Had to think about that one. It's the old problem, you never register the special things in your own town. And I didn't want to go all the way to the Black Forest, as I'm rarely there, anyway. But I remembered something about the local (Breisach at the rhine) cathedral, specifically the high altar.

There's a story about why it's going so high up, and then has a rolled in high end.

The story being that at the time (some time before the 19th century, I suppose), a young carpenter had fallen in love with the mayor's daughter. But the mayer, not liking the carpenter for being a lowly worker, had agreed to a marriage between the two only on the condition that the carpenter make a high altar for the cathedral that'd be higher than the cathedral itself, reasoning that it would be impossible and therefore the marriage wouldn't happen.

But the carpenter observed the climbing roses in a pavilion, and how they'd still grow when reaching the cealing by rolling itself. Therefore, the carpenter made the high altar with said rolled top. Rolled out, the high altar would indeed be higher than the cathedral itself.
Here it is in a larger image in all its glory:

During WWII, the high altar was moved and hidden in the Black Forest, and for good reason, as the old cathedral was destroyed.

cool! =)
I'll need a few days to find something.

Congrats at winning the marine contest, auntie. Interesting new topic! I'm surprised, though - I always thought you were Australian.

No takers?

I'm having difficulty thinking of anything. We are an average, unremarkable mid-sized city, with an unfortunate tendency to tear down our historic buildings. We are not exactly a tourist destination, either.

Can it be anyplace you've lived, even if you weren't born there, and don't live there anymore?

In my hometown we have people from 6 continents and some 50 countries. In order to get into contact with the natives, these guest workers started an international cooking club: every month they pick a different country and cook its best and most typical dishes. Everyone can participate. It's extremely popular and 2 years ago the club won both the integration award and the asylum award =)
Unfortunately, there never are any leftovers...

@think if you like, you can send me your pic or a link to it and I'll put it online on my server. A raw version will suffice, I can clip and resize it :)
I'll PM you my email address

I know there’s a lot I can post but it’s too late for me to research them.. I think William the silent is neat. In the college— And across the street from me is a statue I need to investigate as well but then with a iPad I am seeing the difficulty. @rhubarbodendron thanks another time perhaps.. :)

any time! Btw ik wist helemaal niet, dat je 'n Nederlander bent :) (Ik kom uit Beieren.)
I love the fact that google offers hits for "quotes by William the Silent" :D
