Mirror Universe movie?

Does anybody else think a Mirror Universe movie might be a good idea? I was watching "Mirror, Mirror" and "In A Mirror, Darkly" and got to thinking about that. I think "In A Mirror, Darkly" definitely shows the potential for a story about Mirror universe characters to be epic and cinematic. I also believe Star Trek has a pretty good track record with mirror episodes. I haven't seen all of the DS9 ones yet, but like me most people seem to dig the ones in the early seasons (haven't seen the last few or any of the Voyager ones).

With all the mirror episodes DS9 did (did Voyager do many?), I guess it's not the most original idea for a Star Trek TV episode anymore at this point, but on the big screen it could be fresh. Especially with the new cast. It might be neat to see Quinto playing Mirror Spock with a beard. Am I the only one who can imagine that working and being both fun and intelligent? Even with its inevitable cheesiness, I think the '60s "Mirror, Mirror" is still a classic with some surprisingly thoughtful philosophy and character study in it.

I loved several (though not all) of the mirror universe episodes, and there are definitely some epic ideas there, but what I wonder is if they would be as enjoyable to the casual fan as opposed to Trek geeks such as, oh, me for example. The appeal of the episodes is seeing our familiar characters...bent in unexpected ways. So would a casual fan who doesn't know the regular universe characters very well get the same kick out of seeing the mirror universe characters? I don't know.

Would they have to be introduced to the regular characters before the movie goes to the mirror universe? Or...

I don't know. Interesting idea, though.

So you want Star Trek characters to act very un-Star Trek? Either you have an issue with the way Trek characters are portrayed, or you want some dark, gritty, BSG-esque series with the Trek label.

Sorry. Corny as it sounds, Star Trek is about optimism. Darkening it up just to capitalize on the critical successes of BSG and The Dark Knight, which is, I suspect, you hope, won't help it any. I like what JJ's doing. That's the future of the Franchise, and not some gimmicky What If's.

Interesting take. I didn't get that feel from the OP. I got that the Mirror eps were fun, and would they work as a movie. On that point, I'd have to agree with Kate. Sure it would be fun for us more hardcore fans who really know the ins and outs of the characters, but I don't see any way that a Mirror Movie could be a success. Too confusing for the cassual viewer.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking about capitalizing on the success of anything or going "grittier". The Mirror Universe episodes did have dark elements, but they were also often very entertaining and even funny.

I was thinking of how it might work from a purely creative standpoint. I was imagining that once the characters have been established to general audiences in the new movie, a logical course for a sequel might be to do a more epic, expanded "Mirror, Mirror" type story, which (as you will recall if you remember the episode well), did end on a note of optimism, despite the darkness throughout.

I don't think a Mirror Universe movie would necessarily just be pandering to Star Trek fans. Once the general audience has become familiar with these characters due to the new movie, I can imagine it making just as much sense and seeming just as interesting to everyone else as it has been to us (if done right).

On that, I agree. Star Trek's fortunes lie in mass appeal and not some one shot fan film.

The Mirror Universe is really only good for a few one-off stories--drag it out too long and it becomes apparent, especially regarding the Terran Empire, that there's no way a society could really operate in such a fashion and get things done.
