In the Delta Quadrant, the Ocampa known as Kes slaughters several dozen Kazon-Ogla using her psychokinetic abilities. She is retrieved from the Ocampa homeworld's surface by her love Neelix. The pair flee from a Kazon vessel and are propelled in the Alpha Quadrant.

As O'Brien begins construction of a duplicate of the U.S.S. Defiant NX 74205 from the other universe, he persuades other rebels to aid him in acquiring components. A rebel group led by Chakotay is returning from one such mission when it encounter's Neelix's vessel. Whilst Chakotay's crew rescues Neelix, when the vessel is destroyed; Kes is captured by an Alliance vessel. Kes is subsequently identified as a possible telepath and taken to Monor Base on Ardana for further tests. Chakotay and his group travel to Ardana to rescue Kes, believing she could lead the Alliance to locate the rebels hidden base. The group are captured by Monor Base commander B'Elanna, a Klingon-Terran half-breed, thanks to her agent Kate Janeway. Janeway, Chakotay's engineer, is subsequently killed by Chakotay who also perishes. B'Elanna and Cardassian scientist Crell Moset manage to escape Monor Base before its destruction at the hands of the survivors of Chakotay's group. Tuvok succeeds in rescuing Kes and Neelix, but transfers Kes to another vessel for transport to the Memory Omega base on Regula I. Tuvok then convinces Neelix and the others that her abilities had caused her evolution into a non-corporeal form. Kes begins training with Tuvok's wife to control her abilities.
