"Mirror, Mirror"- Tantalus Device Question

In "Mirror, Mirror" our Captain Kirk is shown the Tantalus Device hidden in his quarters by Marlena Moreau and is told that it made him (Mirror Kirk) captain. Presumably by Mirror Kirk using it to assassinate Mirror Pike (as mentioned by the computer).

IIRC, Moreau mentions (or it might be in the novelization) that the device was stolen by Kirk from an alien scientists laboratory.

Now to my question: Does the Tantalus Device have a counterpart in our universe? Given that a great deal of people AND situations and technology seem to be similar in both universes it would seem likely. Would our Kirk knowing such a device exists try to find the version of it in our universe as it obviously would be a powerful bit of military technology.

I've always thought that maybe Kirk stole it from Dr.Tristan Adams in the mirror universe as his penal colony was also called Tantalus and maybe Pike was still in command at that time over there?

I think it's a valid point to say that ship to ship transportation makes the tantalus device largely obsolete. The only differences are size, traceability, and ease of use. So it was more convenient to use. He didn't have to rely upon the loyalty of a transporter operator but having an auxiliary transporter circuit piped to one's quarters for remote access could work just as well.

I could see Kirk including that in what must have been a fairly lengthy report to Starfleet, and possibly recommending that any such device be located to keep it out of, or get it out of, enemy hands. I can also see Kirk omitting it from his after action report altogether. However, he'd have to get Scotty, McCoy and Uhura to do the same, as they saw it in action.

They saw the results. The four security guards vaporized. Not the device itself. I was most impressed by the device's monitoring capabilities. It seemed to be able to find anyone aboard ship at any time. Of course this could've been simply tapping into the ships internal sensors I suppose.

Moreau says Mirror Kirk got it from an alien scientist. So no, I hope they don't try to cram that into Discovery. It already suffers from an alarming amount of fanwank.

Strange that Kirk or Mirror Kirk would reveal it's existence to Marlena or anyone else? I mean all she is a Captain's woman and so used to being shuffled around in the fleet perhaps or once she's gone Kirk would zap her anyway!

That's pretty much what happens in @garamet's Mirror Universe story "The Greater Good." in the collection Shards and Shadows. I highly recommend it if you haven't read it.
