Miri

I just rewatched Miri for the first time after the 1980's and found it surprisingly good. Even the bonk bonk bonk wasn't _so_ annoying (or maybe I just expected worse after reading this thread). But they did leave the bit about the planet being a copy of Earth hanging.

Did you notice that the small girl Kirk was carrying near the end of the episode was Shatner's daughter?

It's pretty obvious when you see him.

It's the one that's about the same age as Miri... Was it John?

No, no, no... although he's a close runner-up. :guffaw:

The ugly one is the one who shouts "Bonk, bonk!" every time anyone is silly enough to leave him space to get a word in. Christ on a bike, did he get several too many whacks with the ugly stick or what? I can only surmise that he was the result of a breeding experiment that went horribly wrong. :shifty: Yes, even in the 23rd century...

The minute Pollard appears the episode takes a big step toward the 'crap' direction.

They couldn't find a talented actor under 27 to play a 14 year old going through puberty?

The 'bonk bonk' kid was John Megna who played in To Kill a Mockingbird' as the child version of Truman Capote.

How they knew at 8 years old he was gay enough to play Capote as a child is baffling.

Sadly he died of AIDS many years ago.

And he was damn ugly.

P.S. His character was not named Truman in the movie, but the writer of the book and novel has explicitly stated he was playing Capote who she was a life-long friend of and knew from the early age depicted in the movie.

Also, at least 8 actors from To Kill a Mockingbird appeared in Trek at some point.

I dunno -- I always thought he and Matt Damon could play brothers, and people kept trying to tell me Matt Damon was not an ugmo:

The only major differences I see is Damon has more of a grape-shaped head and tries not to make his expressions as goofy.

This was one I really liked. I agree, the "parallel earth" thing was mentioned and then left out there, but I thought the rest was very well acted, and the pacing was very tense and exciting.

I guess I can understand the reasons people might think the Miri/Kirk interaction was creepy. I guess I didn't see it that way, because while he certainly was aware she had a crush on him and used that as an opening to get help and information, it was clear to the audience that he had no intentions of either 1) using her callously, or 2) consummating a physical relationship. Kirk clearly did have a legitimate platonic affection for her safety and well being. And the way he picked up and treated the children was downright paternal (in fact, he had a one of his actual daughters in the group, I believe). So it never reached the older man/naive young girl level of creepiness to me.

Definitely a winner of an episode to me.

One of my least favorite episode's, but did like the concept of another Earth somewhere else in the universe.
