Miranda II

Why the two deflectors if it's not built to separate? The variable geometery bit seems rather forced.

I was just making stuff up. Which would make me qualified to write for any of the series. ;)

The ships that are designed to separate don't have a secondary deflector. At least not one that's visible.

And of course, the original Reliant had no dish at all. But I seem to remember the grid lines being referred to as a "deflector grid", but if that's the case, why have a dish on any vessel?

I never saw Firefly on prime time TV here in the UK, I think it got a late night mid week slot from what I remember. It's not been repeated to my knowledge, and since it got cancelled pretty quickly I assume not many people in the US watched it either. I cant comment on how good it was since I got a chance to see it.

As for the small upper deflector, I think Sternbach put it in for the same reason I put the cutaway in mine; to give it some detail and character in an otherwise empty area.

No, Fox never gave it a chance. Not to mention that they kept preempting it with sports and changing its time slot during its short run, it's a wonder anybody was able to catch it. It really is a great series, and since it's only 14 episodes plus a movie, you ought to at least give it a try.

*After* you finish this model, of course!

I think we need a rear upskirt view. Is there a fantail aft ventral? And I was just thinking about the narrow keel of the Akira and wondering how that would look with this.

Love it axeman can't wait to see it complete I like the roll bar but your missing the phaser cannons on the bottom of the roll bar.? Are u going for phaser strips like the 24th century starfleet vessels !!

Hi all. I dont get a lot of time these days, in real life I now have to travel quite a bit for work, but lucky for me I broke my toes on my left foot so have some desk time. I spent my spare time today knocking up a Trek design based on my favourite model, the Miranda class USS Reliant.

I always loved the Reliant from the moment I saw it, as it was both recognisably Federation graceful and at the same time squat and powerful looking. It was compact and looked like it would make a nice ship to run around the galaxy in. Here's what I got this afternoon based on the same sort of setup. If I get a chance tomorrow I'll try and start refining and detailing it. Comments and suggestions always welcomed...

Hmm... All I can say is THAT is fuckin' sweet! :techman:

I like it, although I will say the side profile view reminds me think of a frog and/or one of Squiggy's avatars here on the BBS. :)

Cheers,
-CM-

Patrick, it's not the Freedman, that is going in another direction. This is a complete fresh start, just mucking about with the Reliant layout I like so much.

No pics today, nothing much to be seen for a few hours work. I redid the nacelles yet again, changing the bussards again and getting modelled detail on the warp grilles instead of silly textures. I also sharpened up the lines of the main hull, froze it for detailing and cut in the upper detail areas where all the greebles will go. I also built a proper bridge sensor dome and then altered the proportions and angle of the roil bar and pod on the top. A fair bit done, but looks little changed from yesterday. Pics tomorrow after I block in some more big areas.

Well this certainly looks fantastically better than the stupid looking Nebula-class we saw in TNG that was obviously trying to rearrange the components of a Galaxy-class to get something of a Miranda look. That was an epic fail.

Voyager has a proper deflector dish on the secondary hull.

I never knew what that notch on the topside was, but the blueprints HERE say it's another navigational deflector.

Maybe it's got to do with that variable warp geometry nonsense.

The same schematic calls the warp core "power systems", so who knows.

Maybe the great and powerful Rick Sternbach could shed some light?

There's a definite auxiliary deflector forward of the big sensor array. Similar colors and shapes to the main deflector. Has nothing to do with separation (or not) but more with backups.

Thanks for the reply Rick.

I don't think there was ever an on-screen explanation for it, was there?

And I loved the Nebula design, unlike Warped9. So much so I kitbashed one out of the Enterprise-D kit many years ago.

Sorry for the mixup Sojourner/PatrickIvan, I was using my new iPad and it doesn't let you scroll back once you start writing so I had to guess.

Actually I love the Nebula design as well, so much so that I initially toyed with the idea of switching to a pillar and radome style setup for this ship. For one thing it made the engines look a little more in proportion than they were on the Galaxy class.
