Minor 360 dashboard update causing RROD (supposedly)

Mine is just lulling me into a false sense of security, isn't it. The little bastard is dying to explode. I can tell.
It's what mine did to me. But maybe yours is nicer than mine. At this point I don't know anyone (IRL) who hasn't had to have their repaired.

I'll be placing my order today. It's the XBOX 360 Pro 60 GB version bundle pack.
According to the online website I'm getting it from, it's refurbished, but is guaranteed to work on arrival and has a 60 day full coverage warranty, for $199, listed "Like New" and in prime condition. I couldn't find a better deal anywhere else, and I'll finally have a nice gaming system that I didn't pay an arm and a leg for. They have an A+ rating with the BBB (I checked), so I'm pretty confident they're good.

I was using an HDMI cable before the update, but I had no problem with the sound. And I have yet to experience any problems since the update.

Still, I agree that an update shouldn't be mandatory if the problem only has the potential to occur with some users.

Mine went belly-up a couple of weeks ago, and it was only 14 months old (bought Nov of 07). Had the newer heat sink, too. For the early complaints of heat, my console NEVER got above barely lukewarm. Even after playing all day long. So there was never a heat issue. Still, one day it locked up, then wouldn't boot up any more and I got the three rings. Now I have a second machine, while the first gets fixed, then I'll have 'em in two rooms (multiple gamers will likely be playing multiple machines from time to time).

With the lack of heat and whisper quiet DVD drive, I thought I wouldn't have a problem (at least for a while). Even so, knowing all the games I've played for 360, and the advantages of owning Rock Band on the 360, I'd still buy it again and pass on the PS3.

I honestly wouldn't worry about buying a new 360, J. The newer ones seem far less likely to have problems. I got mine in Feb 08' and it's perfect, no problems.
I got mine (an Elite) in March '08, and I haven't had any problems, either. Well, one, but that was game-related (Fallout 3), not console-related.

Yeah, most the actual issues come from ther very early models, or people
who don't take proper care of the machines.

I've owned three from all through the product line.
An '06 Core, an '07 Elite and am now using a '08 Arcade with HDD.
None have ever had any technical problems at all and I doubt this one ever will.

It's really not a shoddy or flimsy platform. I watch PS3 models burn out all the
time in the Gamestop displays and they have to order new ones.
It just needed a bit of tweaking which it's had.

Hopefully my problems are strictly related to the bugs in Fallout. I haven't had a chance to try another game with it to know for sure. If it hadn't been for the timing, I probably wouldn't have given it another thought. But the fact that it's happened 3 straight days AFTER the update and NEVER before is a bit unsettling.

It's just Fallout 3.

I played it for a long time before it finaly started doing this.
If there had been an update back then I'm sure everyone would
blame it on that aswell. The fact is it seems, Fallout 3 has a bug.

I hope so. I can't seem to tear myself away from it long enough to give Gears 2 a good work out. :D Damn it's addictive!

It is. Save save save. That freeze sucks if you don't.
I'm just so glad I only lost four levels, and not, like, ten. Now that I know where so much of the stuff I did is located, I can make up the loss in half the time it took me the first time through.

And perhaps do better ;)

J, make sure that you register your 360 on xbox.com when you get it. This will ensure that you are covered under Microsoft's standard warranty for 1 year (?), and their new 3 year warranty for RRoD issues.

Oh yeah. Every electronic device that enters my home gets registered and photographed. I just can't wait. It should ship either today or tomorrow, and then I should get it by Friday or Monday. :D

The new update hasn't caused me any problems. I got my console in January 2007, and only had one problem (right before Christmas, the optical drive started making a horrible noise, and possibly scratching discs, when the drive was in use). Aside from that (and the odd lockup - I'm looking at you, Star Trek Legacy), no problems that I can think of with the 360.

I've had the odd lock up here and there (such as Fable, Hulk and Iron Man); but I hope it won't lead to RROD. It's been doing it on those few occasions over the past year, and I originally bought this Elite back in 2006; so I hope it's just some random glitches. In any case, I've yet to have a problem from this update. For all I know, it fixed what was giving me the problem.

Which, coincidentally or not, was another Bethesda game.

I risked the update because my friend re-ordered LIVE for 3 months and wow it works  I played it for several hours yesterday and had no issues whatsoever.

My 360 is a little freak since its 2 years & 3 months old and its not RROD on me and had little issues. The only issues I really ever had was disc unreadable but that was mainly on Vegas 2 though the download to HDD has fixed that so it wasn't the 360 locking up just the poorly made laser reader or just VEGAS 2 disc's are really really bad.

oh well my 360 will prob RROD just before 3 year birthday :shifty: in November.
