"Minions" - Review Thread

Not sure why there's not a review thread yet, since it's now been out two weeks but, here goes.

Just got back from seeing it - some fun moments. Bob was BY FAR my favourite - he was ADORABLE and I LOVED his caring for his teddy bear and for "Poochy", who seemed completely oblivious to his feelings for him - hilarious!

Sandra Bullock as Scarlet Overkill was actually really good and I thought she was better than the usual voice stunt casting that permeates modern animated films.

A special mention goes to the songs used in the film. Since this was a 1968 period piece, the assortment of songs they used was INCREDIBLE! Everything from The Beatles to The Doors and more!

Also there was SO MUCH in this film that will go over the heads of the ADHD boogie munchers in the audience. From the Abbey Road walk to the depiction of the moon landing as faked to the various period tv shows shown on tv screens (I was hoping we'd get a shot of TOS but I guess they couldn't get the rights).

Overall, a fun way to spend an evening at the cinema and, unlike other films these days, it didn't overstay its welcome and was pretty close to ninety minutes.

And I was entertained and not bored out of my brains, like I was last Thursday night with the (mis)adventures of Androgynous Rex.

I know I'm not the target audience for this movie, but it looks unbelievably annoying and terrible. I don't see how the Minions could be seen as "appealing" characters enough to be the focus of their own movie. As the side characters in the Despicable Me movies? Perhaps. But their antics and constant babbling nonsense way of speaking for an entire movie? Please. And the stuff from the trailer with the one Minion with the fire hydrants in the jacuzzi. Sigh.

Again, I know I'm not the target audience for this movie but the trailers alone annoy me, so I'm pretty sure an entire movie would make me contemplate suicide.

Actually I'd say that if anything, the film could've used more of the Minions present in it. Every time we switched to the humans (SO's husband Herb was just plain annoying).

I guess it's a personal preference thing. We (apparently along with a LOT of people) find the Minions to be kawaii beyond words. I'm not an overly sentimal person as I'm getting older but my heart was ACHING for Bob whenever something bad happened to him in the movie - I actually fell in love with him!

Any other opinions on the film?

We (myself and the Other Half) love the Minions and plan on seeing the movie at the weekend.

I love the Despicable Me movies, largely for the minions which made me laugh hard at several points, so I fully intend on seeing this movie....after Terminator Genisys and Jurassic World. :)

Doesn't come out here in the U.S. until July 10th.

I can't wait. I have a couple of Funko Minions on my bookshelf. Going on the 10th with the wife and our eight year old son. But I'd probably go see this if I was single.

Just got back from the movie.

Minions is a solid-A movie that my whole family enjoyed. Great soundtrack, good jokes and the Minions are just plain cute.

Took my 11 year old son to see this. He loved it. I thought it was Ok. Made me chuckle once or twice, but that was it. Great soundtrack.

I admit - I was somone who was really over the damn minions. I didn't mind Despicable Me and their appearance in that. But to me they were just another good joke among many, and their over saturation was wearing on my patience.

But I didn't mind this movie. I only saw it because we mixed up the times for Inside Out, but it was an entertaining hour or so. It reminded me a little of Shaun the Sheep Movie meets the tone of The Incredibles, but it wasn't quiet as good as both of those. It wasn't long enough to get annoying, and it wasn't taking itself too seriously.

Maybe this was just due to having lower expectations of it, but it satisfied me a hell of a lot more than yesterday's Terminator 5 did.

I enjoyed the movie, and Bob was definitely the bestest. The nitpicker in me just had trouble with their origin story; it always made more sense to me that they were created rather than evolved. But that's just a nerd being a nerd.

Hubby and I are heading out in half an our to catch the matinee.

I'm really looking forward to it! :D

Just saw it today and was a little disappointed.

In the leadup i saw the trailers and the clips that were released everywhere and having seen them i have seen about 80% of the funny and best scenes.

The rest fell really flat.. very simple and uninteresting plot and characters (apart from the Minions) and at times it tried too hard to be funny.

It's a shame because i adore the Minions but this movie didn't live up to its potential.

This pretty much sums up my feelings about the film when I saw it last week. Just about the only joke that was really funny that wasn't included in the onslaught of trailers was the guitar gag towards the end.

The Gru cameo was nice, but it reminded me how much I rather have another Despicable Me film instead (which we are getting).
