Miley Cyrus Needs College, Says Kellie Martin

It seems to be working for the Olson twins. Things weren't going so well for a while there but once they went off to college we haven't heard much about them anymore, which is good for us and for them.
I don't understand why anyone who's already rich would bother with school. The Olsen twins made a ton of money off all those straight-to-video movies. They're probably still spending Full House money.
Same thing with Miley Cyrus. It doesn't matter if her album sells one copy. She's got a legion of tweens buying her merch. Shirts, jewelry, dvd's, tampons, whatever. The hell with college. Get that money, get out, and travel or party or do whatever.

Um. To better themselves?

Learning isn't all about making more money.
Maybe for some people, but I personally don't subscribe to that idea. College was alright, and I suppose I had some good times there, but I didn't need it to enrich or better myself. I'm perfectly capable of reading books on my own and learning things that way. If I was rich I wouldn't have bothered with college. I understand that some people have dreams of following certain career paths, and that's cool, but as for me, if I was rich, I wouldn't want to work at all. I don't like work. The only work I could see myself enjoying would be writing in some capacity. Sitting around performing tedious tasks and being bitched out by bosses and stabbed in the back by brown nosers is a miserable existence.

Of course, now that I think about it, college might have been a much more enjoyable experience had I not had to work and stress out about money the whole time. I could even fail a course or two just for the hell of it, if I lost interest. Hmm. sounds kind of cool, actually. Go to college, Hannah Montana!

^I had entirely the opposite experience. College was one of the best periods of my life, where I grew up, I learned not just about history and english and math and science but about what the world was really like. I learned about how to deal with people, and how to treat people. The "eductation" you get in college isn't simply relegated to books and exams and pencils and erasers; it's about the people you meet and the life you live.

I'm fairly confident in saying that the people who are advocating that Miley go to college aren't saying it for the benefit of her future checkbook balance. It's about going and learning and growing up. The interview with Kellie Martin raises a very valid, and honestly undeniable point: the child stars who did go to college turned out to be leaps and bounds less fucked up in their adult lives than those who didn't. I think *that's* where a lot of the suggestion is coming from, and it's not something I can disagree with.

The real money is in producing, and that's where many of the most successful musicians have wound up. If she has any sense at all, she'll learn how things work on the other end of the mic and make a career of it. You can make mad bank being a producer, too.

Of course, you have to have talent, technical expertise, and business sense. Other than her vocal talents, I'm not sure what she has going for her.

I know, for me, I underestimated the value of a brick and mortar college. I attended an online university (Phoenix) and got screwed, bad. I'm taking my earned credits and rolling them into a local college (once I can get the money back together again).

I agree, doubleohfive. There are myriad other reasons to go to college besides job training. I went to college with the daughter of a vice presidential candidate, the daughter of a former US president, and the princess of a European country. None of those, I would think, were wondering what kind of job their degrees would get them.

Those 4 years between 18 and 22 are personality formative. You learn, among other things, how you fit in the world. It's about perspective and maturity. I think Kellie Martin's comments speak to this -- how important it would be for Miley Cyrus to figure out who she is besides a media creation who everyone pretends to adore because she is a cash cow.

I think Cyrus is very talented, and has a natural stage presence. I'd rather see her pursue an education (in whatever subjects) and return with maturity to take on good acting roles, like say, Jodie Foster, than wind up rich, tragic, and crazy, like say, Michael Jackson.

Let me put it another why, why should we care what Miley Cyrus does?

She's the daughter of the man who gave us "Achy Breaky Heart," the most groundbreaking, innovative song of all time! If that's not reason enough to care, I don't know what is.

Brent, what's your damage? If you don't care, why bother posting in here? If you do, then what content do you have to add to this thread?

Miley Cyrus, being who she is, has become a person of interest to the media, to her audiences, and like it or not, to people reading and participating in this thread. What point are you trying to make by asking the same question over and over again?

By now the thread has shifted toward a discussion about the value and point behind pursuing a college education. Do you have anything cogent to add to that discussion?

"I'm not looking to be Miley f*cking Cyrus" - Taylor Momsen

Well then. The 16-year-old Gossip Girl star, who's never shied away from speaking her mind, recently told FHM UK that she loathes comparisons to another teen idol.

Both Miley Cyrus, 17, and Momsen are stars who sing and act, but Momsen fronts the dark, edgy band The Pretty Reckless and Cyrus sings lighter country-pop fare.

Comparing the two, Taylor says: "I don't care about fame. I do it because I love music. I like making records and if people like them, then we'll go along for the ride."

"I'm not dissing Miley personally. However, I do think the Disney bubblegum s*** that the world is living right now is pathetic. I thought we passed that repression."

"I don't know Miley, but we're different. To compare us because of age is silly."

Taylor isn't trying to be Miley ... but is Miley trying to be Taylor?

Although she's been trying to shed her perky 'tween image with provocative outfits and sound bytes, Cyrus rose to fame as the squeaky-clean star of Hannah Montana.

Interestingly, Momsen herself is said to have auditioned for the Hannah role. She was 7 when she starred as Cindy Lou Who in 2000's How the Grince Stole Christmas.

Momsen tells the magazine that fans should be "surprised" by her band's new album. "I mean, it's a rock record. I get that there is this blonde thing from Gossip Girl and they're expecting pop s***, but it's a rock band and its heavy. Our record is a life record."

"It confronts everything head on, death, love, drugs, sex, religion, politics."

I was surprised and saddened to see her latest music video. I don't know why, it should have been obvious to me that this was where things were headed, but you always think, "this one will be different." Nope! That only turned out to be true for Mandy Moore, but even she had a little bit of a sexy stage.
Hilary Duff has grown up pretty well. I don't think Miley has gotten too trashy yet. Definately not into Britney territory anyway.

Well.... a pause for thought...

A lot of young girls say, out loud or to themselves, "When I grow up I want to be like.." and insert a name. Now if they say Cyrus, wouldn't it be better if she was going to college, gettting her act together and living a quality life? Better that than, say, Spears?

I get that what with the hormones and the growing and the whatnot, they want to cut loose and get dirty, but if you're in the public eye, you have in effect set yourself to be some kind of role model. You have a responsibility to the people that admire you? Don't want the responsibility? Take yourself out of the public eye. Some of them encourage the paparazzi to catalogue their exploits, and that sickens me, but that's a different thread.

That's true, there is still plenty of time for Miley to head in the right direction. Though when I heard her latest song on the radio I thought it was a Britney song. It was quite different from her pop country stuff.

On the other hand, train-wrecks like Britney Spears help teach kids to find better role models.

Isn't Miley supposed to be one of the better-adjusted teen stars?

Until she started appearing in some revealing outfits she was... So was Britney Spears IIRC.

What's wrong with women being sexy anyway? :wtf:

Nothing wrong for a woman...but a 16/17 year old girl is pushing things a little.

You're quite right, but unfortunately agents and magazines have the abilty to spin "falling down drunk in the gutter without underwear" into something cool, something to aspire to.

My favourite fantasy is that people stop buying those wretched, wretched gossip magazines and put a hundred thousand paparazzi out of work. I know it's a fantasy, but... I can dream!

In most societies, 16/17 years old is old enough to get married (with consent) and have sex legally with people in their own age group. She's not 12.

I'm just trying to wrap my mind around what she has done that sets her apart from any other 17 year old young woman. I mean, if you want to say all of society is fucked up and we should all be more puritanical, go ahead and make that argument, but she's not a whore, and I've never seen her act like a whore. Like it or not, as soon as these girls have the boobs, legs and hips for it, they're going to be sexualized in some way by the media, by the public, by their fans, and for the most part they're not going to mind one bit.

If you want all of your performers to wrap themselves up in turtle-necks and cotton pants there are probably a lot of great, wholesome Christian singers doing their best impression of Amy Grant to fall back on.
