Miles O'Brien wins a bottle of scotch whiskey from Worf in a bet

HOW could the actor Colm Meaney (who is Irish, and the character he plays is also Irish) have allowed this to be filmed?

The real conundrum would be if he was presented a choice between Jameson's and Bushmills. In TNG canon, Ireland was reunited through the success of terrorist activity in some past year. Presumably, the Catholics won. Would they even make Bushmills anymore?

Speaking realistically, why not a bottle of scotch? I like single malt scotch, blended scotch, Irish whiskey, Kentucky Straight, Rye whiskey, and even this little-known, 12-year old Japanese delight called Yamizake. To limit oneself to a single choice is just, well, it's not IDIC. ;)

Small sips and spend time rolling it around the mouth.

I'd also be considered heretical but I do tend to drink whisky on the rocks, versus neat.

Another way some drinkers like it is with water. Reduces the alcohol burn, but you still taste most of the complicated peat and wood flavors. (Use good water for this, not tapwater unless you have unusually good tapwater.) 1:1, or 1 part water to two parts whisky.

Or don't worry about it. It's not going to hurt you not to drink whisky.... unless you're an invader from Andromeda and have taken over the Enterprise and Scotty is drinking you under the table.

(snaps fingers, mutters to self)
Damned humans, they found my weakness. Though why can't they figure out my home galaxy is not called Andromeda... it's Yergopashinich. Yergopashinich, you stupid humans!!!

Irish Unification is next year! At least in the Trek universe. :)

have you seen what Sunak’s upto in NI? It wouldn’t surprise me if it came true.

other predictions from that time would be television not surviving past 2040. I’m not sure it will last that long to be honest.

Season 6, episode 15. Dax is playing Tongo with Quark, and O'Brien bets Worf that she'll lose. If O'Brien wins he'll get a bottle of scotch whiskey from Worf, and if Worf wins he'll get a bottle of bloodwine from O'Brien. Dax loses, and O'Brien wins his whiskey, adding that he'd like if it came from the highlands (meaning a mountainous region of Scotland).

As others have said, just because you obviously hail from a specific ethnicity and region, that doesn't mean you are limited to that ethnicity's traditional food and drink.

Or even a species' traditional food and drink. Consider the number of people on DS9 whose idea of a pleasant night out with a date is eating gagh at the Klingon restaurant.

Incorrect.

Scotch was inwented in Russia. ;)
By a leetil old lady from Leningrad.
CHEKOV: Scotch? Eet vas inwented by a liddle old lady from Leningrad.

Some stations rerunning the show cut that scene so it was either incomplete or not there at all. I made a reference to it during a meeting of the local Star Trek club we had in the '80s/'90s, and nobody else had any idea what I was talking about.

So I recited Scotty and Chekov's conversation for them (it's bemusing that of all the things I could have chosen to remember for decades, that dialogue would be one of them... )
