Season 6, episode 15. Dax is playing Tongo with Quark, and O'Brien bets Worf that she'll lose. If O'Brien wins he'll get a bottle of scotch whiskey from Worf, and if Worf wins he'll get a bottle of bloodwine from O'Brien. Dax loses, and O'Brien wins his whiskey, adding that he'd like if it came from the highlands (meaning a mountainous region of Scotland).

HOW could the actor Colm Meaney (who is Irish, and the character he plays is also Irish) have allowed this to be filmed?

Because it's a united Earth and he likes Scotch?

Why either of these things wouldn't be available at the station's replicators (which O'Brien is in charge of, right?) is beyond me.

Why can't Miles just enjoy a good scotch now and then? He also infuses his chewing gum with scotch in Take Me Out to the Holosuite.

Miles drinks Irish whiskey as well. It doesn't have to be either/or.

National boundaries have ceased to have the importance they did in the 20th Century by Star Trek's time. If he likes Scotch whiskey better than Irish, why shouldn't he have it?

He doesn't necessarily have to like it better, he just enjoys variety. He drinks an Irish whiskey on his birthday, for example.

Irish Unification is next year! At least in the Trek universe. :)

And Chekov's more of a whiskey guy than a vodka guy.

The Kelvin one was, at least. Did you know that scotch was invented in Russia? ;)

He is? Only time I remember him drinking liquor was in The Trouble with Tribbles, and it was vodka.

"mildly" sexual? sounds very sexual to me. I can understand that reaction if they never had good liquor before though.

Isn't it generally agreed that replicated Scotch is inferior to the genuine article? Didn't Scotty point this out in TNG?

It can't be. Because that would cause scarcity.

When something is scarce, it has value.

Exactly. If real Scotch (which is hard to make) is better than replicated Scotch (which is easy to make) then that would not be post-scarcity.

That's the kind of thing TNG played fast and loose with and DS9 didn't want to be bothered with at all.

Although even in In the Pale Moonlight Sisko indicated that if they had better data they could make an indistinguishable kali-fal. So how hard could blood wine be?
