Anyone here watching the olympics? I know it's hard with the time difference and all (At least for the North American Audience) but I've been watching a good portion of it today. Saw the Downhill skiing and I do follow the Hockey to an extent. Even saw the 3000m race with the gold medal winner and that was exciting. I figured with it going on now we can have a thread dedicated to it. After day one I'm not really caring about spoilers that much so I don't know if I need to spoiler tag this. I just wanted to get a thread going to see if there was any interest.

Don't follow it that much but this just in.

Lindsey Vonn, multi Gold/World Cup/whatever winner in her career, who has a right knee prosthesis and tore her ACL LAST FRIDAY (!!!) started with her alpine ski downhill race ( whatever it's called in english, i'm sorry) crashed 20 seconds into the race and had to be picked up by a helicopter.

Good luck to her but also what a giant dumbass! :brickwall: :brickwall:

At least those of you on the East Coast have it better than those here on the West.
Imagine having to get up at 1-2 in the morning to watch your favorite event.

I recorded it and just saw the crash. I really had a bad feeling about it ever since the press conference. You long for the great moments in the Olympics (like Esther Ledeska) but when it goes the other way it really sucks and you have a sinking feeling. The last thing she will be remembered for is that crash and whether or not it was all worth it.

This may sound harsh but at least she only endangered herself and has only herself to blame. I hope she makes it out well enough ( an update says she broke her leg in the fall) and after recovery can lead a decent, pain and complication free life but i sincerely hope she uses the time to reflect putting her life and health on the line for competition.

She already torn the ACL. We don't know the extent of this injury or if she even will live a pain free life. Repeated injuries in any sport can stick with you for a long long time. Look at football players, for example.

With that said I hope she does recover and lives a pain free life. Also think she should be done skiing and retire.

She is 41, that should indeed be the (sad) end of her career.
I wish her a nice and efficient recovery.

1st gold for French biathlon today. Other medals are expected in this field.

I can't speak for myself, however, my mom and Wink have interacted with her a few times, because she has trained and competed at the same ski resort they work at, and, they say she is an unpleasant person to be around.

I heard about Vonn's disastrous mishap. She took the chance, and knew what she was doing, probably better than we do, and hopefully she'll still be able to ski recreationally.

Watching Italy and the UK in mixed doubles curling, as I type this, after watching USA beat both Estonia and Sweden in a couple of real nail-biters, to clinch a spot in the semifinals. On paper, curling looks like a combination of lawn bowling, shuffleboard, and janitorial work, but in real life, it's a chess game on pebbled ice. Arguably the most civilized of team sports.

I read an update that Vonn broke the leg but is in stable condition. I do hope she has a speedy recovery. I do feel bad for Johnson though. She had a hell of a run and deserved the gold medal and it's being overshadowed.

well i am from canada lol so yeah there is the time difference from here to italy but on cbc it will brodcast the winter olympics almost a whole day lol lol

i am not exactly watching the entire thing but i have somewhat been watching like small portions of it lol

one of the crazyest moments i saw so far was when a skier from i think norway and he was celebrating his win bare chested and layed in the snow in victory

And now Vonn is officially a dumbass and dangerous idiot in my book because instead of being a role model and warning others not to do dangerous things while injured she goes "Oops, my bad. No regrets!"

“I tried. I dreamt. I jumped. I hope if you take away anything from my journey it’s that you all have the courage to dare greatly. Life is too short not to take chances on yourself. Because the only failure in life is not trying. I believe in you, just as you believed in me.”

What kind of message is this sending to all the kids and teenagers currently training in sports that "courage" makes up for bad judgement? This is why i don't like professional sports and hypercompetitive personalities - they ruin their bodies and health for fame, medals and money and young kids look up to them and want to follow in their footsteps but in reality often lay the groundwork for a lifetime of chronic problems and pain.

This pisses me off so much :censored:

Maybe not completely overshadowed: last night, while I was watching the UK/Italy mixed doubles in curling, there was a cutaway to Johnson's entire run and medal ceremony.

What's this about the medals spontaneously falling apart?!? Was there some kind of casting flaw?

Someone in another post asked if she took the spot of someone more qualified on the US team.
If that's the case, then it really doubles as selfish.

This is a thread about the Olympics. Not a thread for endlessly prattling on about Vonn.

Only hours after having just been beaten by Italy, Cory and Korey went into the hammer shot of the final end of a semifinal match against Italy, with Italy ahead after 7 ends, and Cory Thiesse nailed it, putting Thiesse and Dropkin into the gold medal game against Sweden.

On YouTube: one perfectly targeted rock.

Illia Malinin had a great short skate program. First two jumps were a little iffy I thought (Though he did land them cleanly) but that last combo put him over the top. Felt back for the skater after though. Didn't land a triple axil cleanly, and that's usually a walk in the park for the guys now.

Women's US team handled Canada very well. I wonder if there are other teams who watched this game thinking Canada is vulnerable, especially with Poulin not there.
