A member of the "EGOT club" passes... I liked so much of his stuff. A real actor's director, he seemed to enjoy working within performers' expressive limitations and could almost always make it work. Ann-Margaret in Carnal Knowledge was amazing. As a big fan of Catch-22, I think he and that amazing cast probably came as close to capturing the book as we'll ever get.
I thought Working Girl could have been OK if not for one of Nichols' rare miscasts: Melanie Griffith couldn't play smart enough to even seem believable explaining the stuff she was supposed to be doing, let alone actually doing it.
When I was younger and heard about Nichols and May I always assumed they were married, thinking of Stiller and Mera I guess. I used to get their records from the library: wonderful, unforced character comedy. A real first-class talent that I'm sorry to see go.
