Microsoft announces Windows 10

I meant no offense to anyone still running XP - I'm still running it as a play out server at home - but Windows 7 is a far more modern OS and one that the majority of people are sticking with. All other computers I have run 7. I don't see any point in changing to 8, but with 10 ticks a few boxes then I'd probably upgrade soon.

no prob! Just being silly. I love that you used Luddite! Do not hear that word too often!~ :bolian:

2 GB of RAM and a 200GB Hard drive are more than enough for Windows 7. It would install quite readily on such a machine. A Windows 7 upgrade disc is currently $60, and while I realize that's an expensive option, it's cheaper than the price gouging being done by that computer repair place Random_Spock was mentioning.
The nearest shop selling computers and office supplies to me is Office Max, they don't carry the older operating systems. Most independent shops I've seen seem to deal with business accounts only. I'm in the wrong part of town apparently.

Ideally, I'd get a new machine and transfer stuff I want to keep manually, most install disks and/or key codes have been misplaced. I fear that everything on the dead machine is permanently lost, much of it was downloaded 3d assets, renders, animation footage, etc.

The machine may be dead, but if the hard drive is undamaged then your data is salvageable. Hell, I could hook up your hard drive to my computer and access all of the available data in seconds, and then transfer it off the old drive to the new one, recovering all of the serials and keys in the process. When I ran my computer business, I charged $35 for that service.

I'm hoping it's just a mechanical problem with the drive, as everything else seemed to be working fine. The last time I had tried to cold start, it just hung on the Windows start screen, never prompting for login, for 15 minutes before I gave up.

As you said elsewhere, if only we weren't separated by thousands of miles. ;)

The last time this happened to me, I knew a guy who was able to do what you did, and all of my self-made 3d models and other data were recovered.

Sounds like the master boot record needs restored. That's a very simple job, too. I mean, 2 minutes and it would be done. I could guide you through it.

Unfortunately, there's no working phone set here, my cat likes to chew on telephone cords. I'm between telephones currently, since it's hard to find a plain desk phone anymore. :(

What happened to Windows 9? :p
It’s funny how quickly we’ll all forget Windows 9. Even today, I’m wondering if it ever really happened. Did we really find lines from our e-mails scrawled across our walls in blood? It seems unlikely that the error alert sound was ever six minutes of inhuman chanting. I only know two people who say they clicked The Forbidden Shortcut and found wasp hives on their doorsteps. We’ll forget. It’ll all seem like a silly story someone once made up. Kieron’s probably fine, just fine, happier as a pillar of salt.

[...]

Oh, but what about Windows 9? “It wouldn’t be right to call it Windows 9,” said Terry Myerson, executive vice president of Microsoft’s Operating Systems group. Not after What Happened. How quickly we forget.

“Hi, I’m Joe Belfiore with the Windows Team and someone’s else’s hair, and I’m happy to announce Windows We Can’t Do Maths…”

Honestly, this preview makes a little hopeful. I'm one of the ones that said "Oh, hell no!" to Windows 8, and it seems that they've addressed many of my concerns, including getting rid of the tiled full-screen Start menu, and making Metro apps not be full-screen if you want.

If they had continued fully down the path Windows 8 had started, I'd be looking for a new OS, which is not something I want to do.

So they renamed 9 to 10. What does this do to the "only the odd numbered versions are good" maxim?

Calling it Windows 10 seems more accurate, since it would be the 10th release of Windows NT. Even though there doesn't seem to be a Windows NT 1.0 or NT 2.0

03 - Windows NT 3.0
04 - Windows NT 4.0
05 - Windows 2000
06 - Windows XP
07 - Windows Vista
08 - Windows Seven
09 - Windows Eight
10 - Windows Ten

That's not accurate.

Yea I wonder when Microsoft will start lowering prices on upgrading to new versions? I remember seeing the price to upgrade to 8 (this was at a computer repair place, the price they had listed was for them to help install it) -- it was around $210 (iirc). :wtf: I was about ready to blow a gasket :scream:. They're out of their *bleepin* minds.

I'm not sure they can lower the price. Microsoft being a software company needs to make money off of the sale of their software. Apple on the other hand gives out free software updates because they don't care about software profits, they are a hardware company.

I know. But it's still insane :scream:. At least have a sale now and then. It wouldn't hurt.

Never ever ever ever ever pay more than $89 for an upgrade disc of Windows, ever.

Well, I've downloaded it, installed it on a 40GB partition, and am currently using Windows 10 beta. So far, I'm quite pleased. The Start menu is a welcome friend to see again, and with the tiles I can have instant at-a-glance news, weather, and access to all of my most used apps right there.

I'm most impressed with the speed. Windows 10 is wicked fast, and everything loads up with a snap, even on my 5 year old hardware. I'm going to keep playing around, but so far, color me impressed, and this is only the beta!

Did you download an Iso? The site I went to just wants to install it right over my existing copy of Win 7 as an automatic update.

Yes, I downloaded the 32 bit ISO. They can be found at the bottom of the page as alternative downloads.

Here's a screenshot of how things look: :D

And you can customize just about everything:

One more image, so I don't clutter up the thread, but I found the app store. :D
