Michael Eddington

Eddington´s demise in the Primary Universe meant his shining in the Mirror Universe. Eddington has no Maquis in the MU, but was also a freedom fighter. So the question "what if Eddington had survived" plays out, even thought the preconditions (different political setting) are different.

To point out the benefits that a world will enjoy if it joins, or that an existing member will lose if it secedes, is not using force.

Sure it is - and it's far more force than could be mustered by summoning all of Starfleet's warships.

And supposedly it works, as we indeed hear of no secession. Why did the Maquis shy away from seceding? Because they still wanted the great benefits of being UFP members (such as Starfleet protection against random galactic threats), perhaps?

The Maquis started because they didn't want to be evacuated after the Federation gave up their worlds in a treaty. They never wanted to secede from the UFP before that.

But, if they took Quark on as their political advisor they would have come to a peaceful agreement at the beginning.

It seemed like Eddington came out of nowhere. When my husband were watching DS9 at first, all of a sudden, there he would be as a high ranking official. More than once we were both like, "Wait what? Who the hell is this guy?"

I side with him in regard to the Cardassians though. Maybe that's my anti-authoritarian personality but I thought he made great points. I didn't approve of what he was doing, however, and I also found him to be quite the jack ass. I did rather enjoy the Maquis plot much (but not all) of the time.

Eddington is the reason why I took a liking to the Mirror Universe novels

where he is still alive.

Hm. There a uncountable parallel universe, where he is also dead or leads a different live (less jack assy, for instance). ;)
