MiB's name is...

I wonder why they decided to keep that a secret? Or was it more of a meta-joke where they were just screwing with the fans because they could. Sort of apropos if you think about it.......;)

I guess the writers thought it would be cool to not give him a name. I thought it was silly that they didn't reveal his name in Across the Sea. The main characters ended up calling him Locke during the last couple of episodes.

You can also find out which Kwon was the actual candidate.
I couldn't watch the clip, so I don't know what was said, but someone here suggested that the reason Sun didn't get sent back to 1977 was because she wasn't a candidate.

I couldn't watch the clip either. However, given that everyone else that went to 1974-1977 was a candidate, that makes sense. However, what kind of point were they trying to make with all the candidates being men if any? Not necessarily opposed to the idea if there's a good point but it seems kind of sexist to me......

Jin being the Kwon candidate is also supported by the fact that he wasn't killed when the freighter went kablooey in the season four finale.

After what happened with Jacob's mothers...maybe he didn't want women with children to go through what happened with him.

I'm not seeing the problem.

Kate and Sun became mothers, so they weren't candidates anymore.

Jin was a candidate, so he a) wasn't killed when the freighter exploded, and b) like Jack, Kate, Sayid, Hurley, Juliet, Miles, Faraday, Charlotte, Bernard, Rose and Sawyer, he was transported to 1977, likely by Jacob to keep them protected from the resurrected Samuel/Man in Black.

I don't know if that makes sense--why send them back in time to begin with? To protect them from Smokey? Why? Smokey couldn't hurt them since Jacob was still alive during the bulk of season 5. And the worst time to do so was in 2007 once Jacob was dead and MIB had free reign which is what happened in "LA X". But then ultimately they were never in danger at any time from Smokey since as part of the RULES he couldn't hurt them himself.

And the whole thing with the time travel--I initially thought the time travel was random within the series i.e. whatever point in time they landed was simply luck of the draw caused by the temporal properties of the exotic matter just throwing them from one point in time to another. But then when some of the 316 passengers vanished in "316" it couldn't have been just coincidence they were sent back to be reunited which suggested someone--Jacob-- sent them there so they could complete their roles in events they were always were a part of.

And I'm still disappointed some time in the final season wsn't devoted to explaining the whole cabin mystery--that feels very unfinished.

But what did he do to be marked off the list and therefore deserving of death? He should have still been a candidate and protected from death by Jacob in "The Candidate"?

He meant that Kate was a mother when she was sent back in 1977--when by that point she would be off the list.

He ceased to be a candidate because he died, not the other way around. There's no rule saying candidates can't die (in fact, it looks to be pretty fucking hazardous) it just means the MiB can't kill them. Sawyer unwittingly did the dirty work for him.

Then why didn't the fuse on the Black Rock not go off--Jack was a candidate--Why was Jin the only survivor on the Kahana when it exploded?

^I think at the time, Richard wanted Jack to kill him because he couldn't kill himself. Jack then realized that he was special too and that he couldn't kill himself either. Same with Michael.

It seems that the two rules governing the mortality of the characters are this:
1. You can't die if the Island isn't done with you, candidate (Jack) or not (Richard and Michael).
2. MIB can't kill the candidates or Jacob directly.

As for Jin on the exploding freighter, I'd just assume that the Island wasn't done with him yet. Just as it wasn't done with Frank on the sub, Locke when he was shot in the gut by Ben over the pit of dead Dharma folks, or the survivors of Oceanic 815.

His name was Samuel, but in the episode JJ Abrams decided to have Jacob say "Hey, Johnny" instead.

Probably it was too mundane once they'd gone long enough keeping it a secret. They knew that no name could meet expectations.
