Mexico says 'emo' youths face discrimination

Mar 15th, 2009 | MEXICO CITY -- Mexico's National Human Rights Commission says that followers of the youth music and fashion trend known as "emo" have suffered discrimination and violence, and recommends sensitivity training to prevent it.

Emos often wear long bangs and skinny pants, and listen to angst-ridden music. The youths were heckled and harassed in a pair of incidents in central Mexico in early 2008, aggressions apparently fueled by an Internet hate campaign by other youths.

The government rights commission says an investigation shows emos "have suffered violence and discrimination both by authorities and the public at large."

It recommended the government provide diversity training in schools and anti-discrimination training for law enforcement personnel.

Well, imagine that... There actually are some Emo's in the world who have good reason to feel persecuted. That makes me laugh.

Replace emo in that sentence with Christians or conservatives or white people or anyone else who constantly whines undeservedly about being persecuted and then get back to me with the lulz when they actually experience large scale violence for their beliefs or appearance.

When people turn simple poking fun into actual violence and hatred, it stops being funny to most human beings. You carry on, though.

Same old story. Sensitive and peaceful people have always been preyed upon by the insecure and aggressive. It's called barbarism.

Meh, not a change from the usual. It's a group of people who happens to be different than another group of people and group B is mean to group A. And the circle of life continues.

good lord, cant wait till the EU hears about this, it will yet another box I have to not tick on the equality part of application forms

I was laughing at the irony, not the Emo's.

I've found it interesting that the emo thing is so big in Mexico, but apparently its HUGE. A few years ago I went to a Morrisey concert here in Texas and it seemed like about 3/4 of the crowd was Mexican.

Well, if I lived in Mexico, I'd be rather maudlin too.

I was an asshole youth in high school and faced plenty of discrimination for it. Where's my pity thread?!

Me too. I was also the campus lunatic and potential 'Columbine Killer' according to the pot-smoking idiots that made up half the student body. Where is our pity thread?

You know, I could make a crack about being emo but this is actually a very serious matter in Mexico. Emo kids in Mexico are regularly beaten up and discriminated against usually because they're also assumed to be gay. (BBC news had an article on this about a year ago)

Honestly, I'm all for a bit of good natured verbal ribbing but they're taking it a bit far and it's very malicious.

No one should be abused and have to suffer because of beliefs or lifestyle choices.

Well, I guess that's all the more reason not to be an Emo.
