Metaphasic Shields

In TNG episode "Descent" pt2 the Enterprise-D hides from the Borg ship by hiding within the corona of a star. Is the corona as far as a ship can go into a star with metaphasic shielding?

No idea :)

To go deeper they need to pass through the next layer which is the chromosphere which may or not may put its toll on those neat metaphasic shields you talked about...

Wikipedia said:
The chromosphere is a thin layer of the Sun's atmosphere just above the photosphere, roughly 2,000 kilometres deep. Although thin, its density increases over almost seven orders of magnitude...

I would say that the shields in question were specifically designed to allow a ship entrance into the Star's corona and remain there for a certain time frame, but hardly indefinitely.

This was expanded upon a bit in Voyager novels (non-canon source I know) and used for the ship to hide there temporarily from the enemy.

Although, Voyager has Multi-Phasic shields (mentioned on-screen) which is I think a standard shield configuration for the stock Intrepid class.
The Meta-Phasic program ois specifically utilized for entrance into the Star's corona and operates when the crew needs it, but is not part of standard function (as it would appear).
