Meatloaf in the Rearview Mirror

That's such a weird coincidence, because I just finally got the classic “Bat out of Hell” album on vinyl the other day. What a voice and what a man! He was a unique figure and it's weird that he's gone now.

May he rest in peace. :(

I remember as a young rock and metal fan not liking Bat. This continued until some time in the late 80's when I suddenly just 'got' Steinman's over the top verbose shtick (possibly through his hits for other artists) and went back through his Bad For Good and then into Meatloaf and Bat and beyond.

Bye big fella, and thanks for the epic lunacy.

R.I.P. Meatloaf, your rock operas were marvelous, thank you for this wonderful legacy. As long as there is civilization there'll be listeners that will appreciate your art.

Rock & Roll has lost one of it's giants. Like many others, Bat out of Hell has a large influence on my teen years and after all this time, I still consider it the greatest Rock & Roll album of all time.

RIP, Meat. You will be missed.

You haven't lived until you listen to the same Meatloaf song for 2 solid hours because the radio in the car doesn't work.

When Meat Loafs star had waned a little in the late 80’s he came on a mini tour of Ireland playing all these rinky-dink venues.I saw him play my home town in what was essentially an indoor equestrian arena. The guy might have been down but by golly did he put on a show.To this day,one of the best concerts I have ever been at.

Heavens choir just got a little bit rockier.

One of my favorite Meat Loaf memories was this celebrity charity tournament thing. He was in some event where you had to catch your competitors and their handicap was that they had to wear some giant mascot head. Meat Loaf can't catch the guy because despite the handicap the guy is an Olympian and Meat Loaf is well, Meat Loaf. They interview a sweat drenched Meat Loaf saying "How the hell am I supposed to catch an Olympic athlete?". To make it funnier, Fergie (the Duchess) and everyone keeps going "C'mon Meatty! You can do it". It's funny enough he was called Meat Loaf but to know his friends called him Meatty was over the top.

You haven't lived until you listen to the same Meatloaf song for 2 solid hours because the radio in the car doesn't work.
Was it Paradise by the Dashboard Light?

This story is well worth a read.

I was always a fan of ML in my youth, could never understand why his stardom waned in the 80s. I thought a lot of the stuff he put out then was pretty good, even if it was no Bat. Was delighted for him when he came back in style in 1993, even if he and Steinman continued to fall out and in again. Got to see him live about 20 years ago. He was good but it was a shite audience. But thanks for the memories big man - Heaven Can Wait no longer.
