McGarrett's Hacker

Just watched this really cool episode of FIVE-0. It was called COMPUTER KILLER, and it aired in, get this, 1975. Its about a hacker who hacks into Phone Records, Police Records and other computers of the time, and plants evidence to make a witness look bad. My brother-in-law, who works at JPL, watched it with me and thought it was really well written for the time...

It has to be one of the earliest TV episodes of anyshow that dealt with Hacking in a believable way...FOUR STARS!!!

he did indeed say that. We were all wondering how FIVE-0 was going to catch this guy because that sort of cybercrime was new..very new. But eventually it all led to the fact that all the comptuer systems were installed by the same company (think IMB) and that only a few men working had that ability.

They had a modem which they called a signal coupler!!!

There's a 1978 episode of "The Six Million Dollar Man" called "Date With Danger" that deals with computer hacking in a hilarious way. As I remember it, it has this supercomputer which is programmed to destroy Steve Austin. At one point, the computer determines that Austin is making a phone call from a certain phone booth. So it uses its supercomputer abilities to send a heavy charge of electricity through that phone line, causing the phone to explode!
Trivia casting note: The evil genius hacker in this episode is played by none other than "Charlie X"'s Robert Walker, Jr.

Yeah..that kind of stuff was over the top. The FIVE 0 episode, for 1975, was, at least for my brother-in-law, ahead of its time. To actually show someone using modums and using it the way the bad guy did was pretty on spot.

But yeah, I remember that 6million Dollar man! WHEN is that show coming to DVD?

FIVE-0 was such a good show, but haven't seen it in years. I really should start collecting the DVDs. That show ran for what, 10 years or so? Are all of the seasons available?

seasons 1-7 with 8 coming out on march 12 2010. There were 12 seasons in all.

It has been fun watching the complexity of the plots getting more involved as time has gone along. One fun part is the use of local actors in several supporting roles on regular basis. Gives it that DS9 feel...

I've never seen the H5-0 series finale, but it made one of those internet blog posts I read a while back on a list as one of the Worst Series Finales of All Time. Apparently the author of the article felt that the 5-0 finale was so ridiculously unbelievable in its plot that it completely undermined the level of credibility established by the rest of the series. But like I said, I've never seen it.

I read that post too, and took him to task. FIVE-0, like our highly vaunted TREK, was not always great. But when it clicked, it was pretty good. 12 years of episodes, and I admit maybe the final two years were not that great...

But it performed and has a loyal following.

Do you know why he felt it was so bad? Feel free to spoil, I'm unlikely to ever see it.

He didnt like it because when Mcgarrett finally catches his nemesis (Wofat) after 12 years of cat/mouse episodes, it comes down to a fist fight with two obvious stunt doubles..

But what I told the guy was that the dialog between the two, when they showed close ups, was actually well written. The fight was hard to believe, but I think, all in all, it was a fitting in. When Wofat is finally in jail, and Mcgarrett walks away, wofat pulls out a small metallic file, and smiles at the camera...

The show lasted 12 years. Like TOS it had ups and downs. There is no telling how many more ups and downs TOS would have had, had it gone 12 years instead of 3. But if the third-season of TOS was any indicator? It would not have been pretty...
