McGann or Baker? The better Shada?

Guy Gardener

Somehow, I'm about to watch Shada for the first time ever, I have no idea my reasoning but I used to have access to the episodes on Video tape a decade back but I chose to ignore the opportunity even after i was told that Tom acting out the missing scenes was described to me as a touch manic.

I quite enjoyed the audio, but surely it's a matter of DEjavu for that lalla and John got a do-over. :)

Actually, it's not a do-over for John, as David Brierly was playing K-9 back then.

I haven't seen the Baker version, but having enjoyed the McGann one, I'm not sure I'd want to. I suspect the actual images will look a bit cheaper than the ones conjured up by my mind.

McGann. The Baker version is, obviously, incomplete, and it's also got some terribly cheap design work. I think the webcast is better acted too. Better off watching the McGann version to see the story as a whole, then going back to the Baker original as a curiosity.

And yes, Tom's linking narration is crazy. "Shaaaaaaaaaaaadaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!"

McGann's version, just because it's complete. I have the original Shada, it's a nice idea to have Tom come in and link it, but without the visuals, or atleast without the nice details for audio that Big Finish did, it was ultimately a novelty. Beside more McGann, the better!

Anyone seen the video of a 8th Doctor story from www.alteredvistas.co.uk ?

Shada was the first 8th Doctor Big Finish audio I bought (this was before they started the downloading thing) and I just loved it! It was great hearing Romana and K-9 again. A week or so ago I started watching the "animated" version on the BBC site, and while it was kinda neat, I much preferred "seeing" the real actors and locations in my head as I listened, rather than the moving artwork on the site version.

Visuallay Lalla is a treat, and her costumes are delightful, but that just leaves me wondering if since shewas President in the McGann version that she didn't 'do" the entire adventure in galifreyan robes? but that casts her as a powerful matriach rather than the girl assitant child still in her second century.

I'm watching Stae of Decay right now, and I'm quite positive that her "costume" is supposed to be a wildwest gunfighter, you know, without the hat. :) Gosh, she'd look great with the hat too.

The villains just didn't seem fleshed out in Bakers version. Bugger.

So, I'm more for mcgann too.

Considering the near 50 adventures he's done since then in the last decade, it's conveivable Tom's tenue is going to shrink into a pittance compared to Paul's innings.

I'm in the more McGann the better camp - though thats the only version I've come across and in terms of acting McGann > Baker.

I love both versions, but I love The Eighth Doctor's version better (and The Fourth is by far my favorite Doctor). It's not even because of the completeness of the production, rather I felt The Eighth Doctor's version flowed very well. Plus, oddly, I found the chemistry between him and Romana to wonderful and refreshing.
