McCoy's daughter: why...

It's also broadly hinted at in one of the Lost Age novels that Kirk impregnated Rand with a daughter that died at the age of two. Her pregnancy was why she left the Enterprise, but Kirk never knew.
This story idea is absolutely hateful ... and I am so glad we never saw anything like this happening to Rand on the show!
The novel was The Captain's Daughter I thought the backstory hinted at was that the evil Kirk from "The Enemy Within" succeeded in raping Rand? IIRC, she kept all knowledge of the baby and the incident from Kirk.

Indeed. She 'fesses all to Captain Sulu. It's actually one of my favourite ever Star Trek novels (I still make time to read it once a year), but that part I'm a little squeamish about.

That would imply that the events played out differently to what we saw on screen. If you subscribe to the fact that they both knew better than to act on their feelings, it's more likely to have occurred when they were a bit bonkers on Miri's planet shortly after Janice's outburst. She may have been scabby but they thought they were going to die and she was the only woman on the planet who'd already hit puberty. Maybe the kids had already got an eyeful when they referred to Mr Lovey Dovey and bonk bonk!

Given how little relationship stuff we saw for the supporting cast in TOS they could easily have included an ongoing relationship for one or more of them even if only by reference of an off screen character.

Not that when "Generations" was originally going to guest star Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley, the lines about Sulu's daughter were actually about Chekov's daughter. Nimoy and Kelley turned down their roles, their lines were given to Doohan and Koenig respectively... and Demora Sulu was born!

It's striking how stereotypically male Kirk, Spock & Bones were written as and portrayed, with regards to how careless they all were with their seed. Bones has a daughter somewhere, in someone else's care and Bones just goes about his life, like he forgot about her. It has also been implied that Spock knocked up Saavik and again, what happened? She goes on to raise the child as a Single Mother, whilst Spock has his Space Adventures, untied and unbound by what he's done. And then there's Kirk, of course, who's got at least one kid he knew about. Even Sulu had to get in on the act with a kid of his own, from out of left field! In that light, where does that leave Scotty and Chekov? Neither one of whom has a child because of either a bottle of Scotch, or Vodka ... and a Friday night. They must be shooting blanks? That's not very heroic, in the STAR TREK universe ... what's that about?
Kirk also had a child with Miramanee. In the fashion of TV at the time, both died.

Since we don't see these characters 24/7 we've no idea what sort of relationship McCoy might have with his daughter. They might be close and in constant communication. He might spend some of his leave time with her.

Similarly, we've no idea if Scotty or Chekov have children. Some might pop up in TrekLit or in a new series or film.

Oh geez. I hope to God he never found out...evil transporter duplicate or not, most of us would feel lower than dogshit if that happened. :(

Although I have to ask: isn't medical science sufficiently advanced in the future that unplanned/unwanted pregnancies shouldn't ever happen? Meaning: By the time 300 years go by, I'd assume that birth control would be perfected to 100% accuracy...

Since when has science ever triumphed 100% over personal belief systems and dumb bad luck.

Sisko and Kassidy both forgot to take their monthly birth control on DS9 and she got pregnant. So even in the 24th century apparently there are still accidental pregnancies even among mature responsible adults.

That's odd. I would think that medical science would have advanced to the point where one has to take medicines to actually LET one get pregnant, not to avoid same.

^ Plus if there were some major extinction event you'd want to keep the default setting at "breed".

If you want to find a Scotty's child or grandchild, you'd better to look for a starship called USS Haggis or Whisky. N-C-C-1-7-0-1. No bloody A - B - C - or D!

Maybe Captain Tryla Scott ("Conspiracy") was the result of STV's Scotty/Uhura.(:ack:)
Uhura was beyond even the aid of Medical Assistance to even get pregnant - to say nothing of giving birth. I suspect they were too old to make love, anyway. Instead, they'd hug and kiss. Pet a little ... maybe even try to dance slow for a couple of songs, before they got knackered. Otherwise, they'd play passionate games of Bridge, Bingo, or anything else "B" named that The Elderly play ... which would've been the full extent of their passion, most assuredly.

Women in their 70s are having children nowadays and Doohan's wife had a baby when he was around 80.

Yes that's right, Uhura FAN DANCER was too old to have sex.

Because she was sooooooo old in ST:V she was practically falling apart, why it's a wonder she was running around on missions and stuff, really it's amazing she could still stand up.

Not necessarily by today's standard, and certainly not by Trek's future, where 140 is the average lifespan of a human male.

There's an upper age limit on sex in your world? I sure as hell don't plan to stop.

And it was only a few years after joining Mr Adventures in the closet.

She said she'd have him eating out of her hand. Was that a euphemism?
